Hello

I'm an Australian keen to teach English in China.  I am 61.  Does
anyone know of a place that would accept me?  I am more than happy to
go to remote parts of China and hope to stay 5-6 years. Not a private
school please.

Many thanks
Suzi

What you can expect to get will depend on what you have to offer.

Have you taught before? If so, for how long and what age groups?
Have you taught English to foreigners?
Do you have experience in business?

There is a tremendous market for teaching English children in China, but I have no first hand experience with it.

I teach at a public university in Changchun in northeast China (I'm 63 by the way.). I have an MA in teaching English and many years of experience in doing this. There are not very many native speaking teachers at this university. The public school does seem to be the most dependable and pleasant of options for those who have desired qualifications and who don't care that much about income. A type of school which seems a bit easier for people with less training and background are those schools which affiliated with a public school but are really separate. This type of school is really private and as such pay better but have a lower grade of student and attendant problems. There is more pressure on teachers to please the students. I have known people who have taught at this type of school and have gotten differing impressions. These are not the typical commercial school, but not the fully recognized academic institution either.

Hope that helps.

I am a year older than you and have been teaching and working in China since I was 52.

Contact me please and I will send you a university and two or three schools that will hire you after you are sixty.  You just have to be well, active, passionate about teaching and you will be well received.  The university that I am thinking of is really very anxious to hire someone immediately.

PS

I need your email address and phone number.  Thx.

Suzi,
I spotted this recent job listing and the listing states that they will consider foreign teachers over 60.
