I received the following a few days ago,  It just sounds too good to
be true, and I wonder whether there is anyone out there who knows what
it is about.

Is it just a clever hoax to snare me or is there such a thing.  My
instinct says, "if it looks too good to be true, it probably is too
good to be true".

There certainly are many such things, as compared to the likelihood of the absurd prize contest you never entered.  This is an instance of what is called "phishing" (fishing) which will produce for the phisher a valuable list of people who answer e-mails including a lot of data about them for those who wish to contrive various on-line "deals" and rip-off using your personal identificaton. . Those ridiculously long numbers -- must be in the gazillions -- are pretty funny.

Ria,

I get stuff like this in my e-mail all the time.  I fell for a scam like this in which I was sent a check for XX amount of dollars only to find out that it was not valid when my parents tried to put it in my account.  Luckily my credit union spotted it and told me that the organization that claims that I won this money didn't even exist.  They were just trying to fish (not sure if that is the correct term) for valid bank accounts to con people like me.  I almost had to pay this crooked organization money but luckily my credit union put a stop to that.  Yes, if it is too good to be true, then it probably is.

I'm wondering if RIA is serious? Most email addresses get several such notices every day -- for decades, and by mail decades before that, she **must** have seen a scam like this, before . I wonder if she really thinks this email is plausible, or if **she's** pulling our collective legs.
