Those of us who can't buy $300,000 apartments in Dalian and then do a $60,000 renovation won't ever get this result, but I thought the story might be interesting anyway.

So much for his guanxi. It's always amusing to hear foreigners talk about how they are building guanxi.

I bought a nice apartment and renovated in central Beijing. It was a similarly arduous and annoying experience as in the article, however I had absolutely no guanxi. Even if I kidded myself that I did have some contacts, it wouldn't provide any comfort whatsoever.

We will always be 'the outsiders'.
