For my fellow Yanks in China or wanting to go to China...I just got my new 2010 "medicare and you" and I checked for emergency coverage when you are in a a foreign country (China) and....NONE.

So...you are on your own for any type of med service including evac back to America. Of course, once back in the U.S. and at your home place of residence, you are then covered.

The carriers have also tightened up on other benefits and increased % deductibles.

There are times I wonder if returning to China to teach is really worth all the effort and expense. I guess it is (in my case) but you are still into negative cash flow and for us older folks, the prospect of some serious illness while in China is daunting indeed.

Don,
It was always my understanding that Medicare wouldn't cover expenses overseas and that you need to depend upon your supplemental insurance (in our case, $50,000.000 in a lifetime)and any insurance purchased specifically for travel. In a serious illness, just medical evacuation can can cost far more that that alloted amount.
