My comment:
So Margaret do you have any information about what the test entailed? Convesation? Interview? Describing pictures?  And any knowledge of the examiner's rubric for marking?

Thanks

The reason he did not do well was because you taught him general English and not English specific for the test. The syllabus for CET, TEM4, TEM8 oral are widely available. Most students do badly at exams like IELTS because they don't know the test and are not taught accordingly.

All are available from Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press.

TEM4 has 3 tasks.

Task 1 is retelling a story.
The passage is about 300 words long and you will hear it twice.

Task 2 is talking on a given topic. This topic is often related to task 1. You will hear the topic twice. You have 3 minutes preparation and must talk for 3 minutes.

Task 3 is role-playing
This involves two candidates. You are given a specific situation and a specified role. You have 3 minutes preparation and the role-play lasts 4 minutes.

TEM8 has 3 tasks.

Task 1 is interpreting from English into Chinese.

Task 2 is interpreting from Chinese into English

Task 3 is making a comment on a given topic. This comes on a sheet of paper. You have 4 minutes preparation time. Your talk must last 3 minutes.

My comment:

Maybe these oral English tests are taken more in the Shanghai area. Does anyone have direct experience of actively preparing any student for a TEM 8 oral exam? As I have said before, in 5 years teaching at 2 universities in Northeast China I have never known of any student taking a TEM oral exam.  It's not an oral English test notice, it's a bilingual test. For me this says an awful lot about the status of spoken English in China.
