Alan, the reason you are probably not given the teacher's book is that
it is written in Chinese.  I have never received a teacher's book.
There is also a perception that you don't need it because as I was
informed at one time, "you are the expert!".

A book I used, without a teacher's book, but still quite successfully,
is "Success in Advanced English Writing - A Comprehensive Guide" by
Shouhua Qi.  (The author is professor of English at Connecticut State
University.)  ISBN 7810468987.  I really liked using this book
although it was too comprehensive to use in one year, and it was
allocated to 2nd and 3rd year students.

Why is it that our memory is good enough to retain the least
triviality that happens to us,
and yet not good enough to recollect how often we have told it to the
same person?

Alan,

Dorothy E. Zemach and Lisa A. Rumisek's _Success with College Writing: from Paragraph to Essay_ is not a bad book, though I assign lots more writing than the book calls for.  It's published by Macmillan Languagehouse.  The ISBN is 978-4-8958-5444-3. I don't know if it's available in China.  It contains very useful appendices and comes with a teacher's manual.  The first author teaches writing to international students at the University of Oregon and is quite well known in EFL circles in Japan.

The focus is squarely on academic writing (with a chapter on timed essays for tests).  My 2nd-year college students can handle the level of English in it.
