You'll need SP2 to reproduce the following steps. Hit
your way through this;

start > control panel > add and remove programs > set
program access and defaults > custom

'Gaim' is not on the list for 'default instant
messaging program'.

This is relatively easy to do:

However, I don't see much value and it is something of a
pain - I'm moving this to the Feature Request tracker.

If someone submits a good patch to do this, it'll likely be
accepted.
