The first sort key is the status as "online", "away", "offline" etc. which is also displayed by the icon. But the second sort key (how buddies with same status are sorted) seems to be the account of the contact (at least for offline contacts). Therefore it happens to me that the offline contacts are not totally alphabetically sorted. This is weird, especially since in. I can't imagine it is intentional since pidgin tries to remove the borders between the contacts. I would expect that all contacts with the same status are sorted alphabetically, no matter which account they belong to.
