#10566: Quit Pidgin from Conversation window#10566: Quit Pidgin from Conversation window
--------------------+------------------------------------------------------- Reporter: afcowie | Type: enhancement Status: new | Component: pidgin (gtk) Version: 2.6.2 | Keywords: --------------------+------------------------------------------------------- It would be delightful if you could add a Ctrl+Q !MenuItem or Accelerator to the Conversation window. I use Pidgin for all my IRC and it is somewhat cumbersome to have to either move mouse to system tray + right click then select quit, or to have to unminimize the !BuddyList window and then focus it and then Ctrl+Q. If I could just Ctrl+Q direct from a [the, since I have them all in one] Conversation window it'd be brilliant! -------------------------+-------------------------------------------------- Reporter: afcowie | Owner: Type: enhancement | Status: closed Milestone: | Component: pidgin (gtk) Version: 2.6.2 | Resolution: wontfix Keywords: | -------------------------+-------------------------------------------------- Changes (by deryni): * status: new => closed * resolution: => wontfix Comment: A plugin could add a Quit menu item to the More... menu as well as adding a /quit command if it wanted to. This is definitely not something we are going to add to pidgin directly though, the possibility of accidental "damage" is *much* too high. People complain about accidentally hitting ctrl-l and clearing the scrollback in just the one IM window, I can't even imagine the complaints we would get if people started randomly quitting pidgin. -- Ticket URL: <http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/10566#comment:2> Pidgin <http://pidgin.im> Pidgin _______________________________________________ Tracker mailing list Tracker@... http://pidgin.im/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/tracker |

People complain about accidentally hitting ctrl-l and clearing the scrollback in just the one IM window, I can't even imagine the complaints we would get if people started randomly quitting pidgin. As you wish. I'd point out in rebuttal that people can Alt+F4 and thereby raise a !GtkWindow 'delete-event' signal, which, since you don't block it, frequently causes people to "randomly quit". Except it's not random; they deliberately [or accidentally, too bad] closed the application window, so no surprise all their conversations are closed/lost [the recent persistent conversation feature notwithstanding]. In any event, Ctrl+Q is consistently "quit application" throughout the desktop. People know what it means, and do it deliberately. {shrug} Doesn't seem unreasonable to be able to do it from the window you spend all your time in. I'll look into the plugin idea. Not sure I'll be able to achieve it but thanks for that suggestion. As long as your IRC experience is better than Empathy's I'd prefer to stick with Pidgin. -------------------------+-------------------------------------------------- Reporter: afcowie | Owner: Type: enhancement | Status: closed Milestone: | Component: pidgin (gtk) Version: 2.6.2 | Resolution: wontfix Keywords: | -------------------------+-------------------------------------------------- Comment(by deryni): Alt-F4 is not a pidgin binding and it therefore is not our place to mess with it (which includes prevention). Personally, I believe that a non-confirmed quit binding is, in general, just a bad idea and should not (by default) exist in any application. I think a confirmed quit binding is also a bad and shouldn't exist by default, but I can at least understand that slightly better. I also happen to think more applications should let you modify their bindings more easily, but that's another matter entirely. That being said I would argue, with what I imagine is virtual certainty, that people simply do *not* expect to be able to quit the application from random windows (imagine if you could quit an application from every dialog box). Adding an item to the More menu is simple (though as I noticed the other day also adds to the buddy list right-click menu and lacks a way to detect in which context the menu is being displayed), adding a command is also rather simple. If you need help with either of those feel free to join the #pidgin irc channel or devel@... XMPP muc room. -- Ticket URL: <http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/10566#comment:4> Pidgin <http://pidgin.im> Pidgin _______________________________________________ Tracker mailing list Tracker@... http://pidgin.im/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/tracker |
