 PLEASE NOTE: I don't think any of my current buddies are on-line at this
 time, but thought the above errors may be helpful.  Yesterday, I did have
 buddies on-line and they where not showing up as "on-line".  I apologize

 I have AIM, Yahoo, and MSN accounts.  I think you are asking if I use both
 Yahoo and MSN at the same time, the answer is yes.  I have one buddy that
 has both an MSN account and a yahoo account - but they are different
 accounts.  I have not added any MSN accounts to my yahoo account (I wasn't
 aware I could do that).  Not sure what a "WLM" buddy is (sorry).

 Pidgin shows him to be offline.

 Sulabh was asking if you had added any MSN buddies to your Yahoo!
 account's buddy list.  This is not possible in any currently released
 version of Pidgin but is possible in the official Yahoo! Messenger client.

 I had a feeling this might be interoperability issue. The status update he
 gets (in the debug log), has key 241 which is for the other protocol
 buddies.[[BR]]
 Anyways, he needs to provide us with the debug log, when those buddies
 which appear offline are actually online. Packet capture will also help.

 Debug log for Yahoo buddies that show off-line when then they are on-line.

 Steps:[[BR]]
 1) start Pidgin (accounts Yahoo, MSN, AIM all active by default)[[BR]]
 2) open Debug window[[BR]]
 3) deactivate Yahoo Account[[BR]]
 4) reactivate Yahoo Account[[BR]]
 5) save debug window - see attached (purple-debug-2009-07-07.log)[[BR]]

 Is there a link that instructs how I can get a "packet capture" for you?

 Yes, a packet capture is needed. Have you heard of Wireshark, its a packet
 sniffer, used to captured packets going through the network
 adapter(s).[[BR]]
 You can download it from here http://www.wireshark.org/download.html.
 I see you are using Windows, so a quick google search for a wireshark
 guide, provides me with this link
 http://portforward.com/networking/wireshark.htm. [[BR]]
 All you have to do is, install the software, run it, start capture
 (default settings are fine), then login to yahoo account while the
 specific user is online but doesn't appear in Pidgin. Wait for buddy list
 to loaded and status to be applied. Then stop the capture, save it to a
 file.[[BR]]
 You can attach the file to this ticket, or mail me directly at
 sulabh.dev@... if you are concerned about the privacy.[[BR]]

 I got the packet capture, and see a strange behavior in the packets.
 Either there is no status update, or the id of the user is missing. If
 there is even one of your buddy online, the missing id is an issue. What
 causes the id to be missing, I have no idea.[[BR]]
 You can do the following to help me further:[[BR]]
 1. You can check if this account of yours work well with the official
 client, and provide the packet capture for the official client.[[BR]]
 2. Please paste the settings for your yahoo account in Pidgin, maybe there
 is something wrong there. To do so, Accounts > Manage Accounts > Choose
 the account > Modify > Advanced. Paste the settings here.

 I just saw another packet capture from some other user, and I have reasons
 to believe that you don't receive any status updates. Are you sure that
 this buddy of yours is actually online, and is not invisible (or has not
 blocked you). Can you receive and send messages to this buddy, while you
 say he is active but shows inactive.
 You really need to check through the official client, and let us know.

 I have this exact same problem.  I'm not gonna post a debug or a packet
 capture, because it's exactly the same problem.

 I'm switching from gaim since yahoo expires their old server on 8/15 and
 obviously there will be no updates to gaim.  Pidgin is inferior IMO,
 ironic since it's supposed to be the successor.  Unfortunately there is no
 adium or digsby for linux yet, so I'm stuck with this as every thing else
 I've tried seems even more braindead (including carrier, which is odd
 since it's supposed to be a more user-focused version of pidgin).

 Yes, users show up as online in gaim and in the official yahoo client.
 Only pidgin (or libpurple rather as it affects finch as well) seems to
 have problems seeing online users.

 I'm guessing U should look at the fix for phantom online users as you're
 probably being too stringent and accidentally eliminating real online
 users as well.  Then again, I haven't actually looked at the details for
 that bug, so what do I know.  It's your damn app, U fix it.  Please. :-)

 I've been using Linux for 17 years and I find it to be superior in almost
 all respects.  But IM seems to be one of those areas where it just doesn't
 move.  At least it doesn't move backwards like sound support. :-P

 And please stop trying to blame the original subby, sulabh, when U know
 perfectly well that you're app is a POS.

 My buddy uses Trillian.  I did the following and concluded this problem
 was related to Trillian and/or the Yahoo server upgrade:

 1) installed the native yahoo messenger (9.0.0.2162) and he '''did not
 show active''' (the yahoo client already recognized him as a buddy -
 buddies must be stored on the server under my account)[[BR]]
 2) used my old Trillian client and he '''did show active'''[[BR]]
 3) used yahoo messenger to remove the buddy (he still showed inactive) -
 removed from everything: buddy list and address book - and readded.
 Received a "server error" message during the readd.  Repeated this process
 a few times and received the same "error"[[BR]]
 4) a few days later, repeated step 3 (with yahoo messenger client) and was
 successful (no server error message), but then had a "pending user
 approval" next to the buddy, but he still showed as inactive.  My friend
 said he did not see any "approval requests". ...???  However, keep in
 mind, he uses Trillian.  Unfortunately, he was strapped for time and could
 not download the yahoo native client.[[BR]]
 5) I repeated deleting/adding his account with the yahoo client, but I
 only got "pending approval" and he did not see any approval requests.  I
 left it as is and decided to deal with it later.[[BR]]

 A few days later, my friend was shutting down his machine, a "yahoo
 approval" request popped up.  He said it was strange how it popped up
 during the shutdown process.  He did not see any prior "approval
 requests".  I think this was really a problem related to Trillian and the
 Yahoo server upgrades.  My friend does use yahoo with a few other people,
 but they all use the Trillian client.

 My apologies for not posting the results once the problem "fixed itself".

 I don't think this was a Pidgin issue.  Thanks for your assistance - all
 is well now.
