 During Canonical user testing of Ubuntu, one task we gave participants was
 to set up an IM account in Pidgin. Two of the four participants who
 successfully completed this were confused that, by default, the Buddy List
 did not show all their buddies. From one: "only that [one online buddy]
 Kevin came up there ... I thought I would see the offline buddies as well
 ... I thought that buddies might be friends." And from the other: "I'm not
 sure where the other contacts are." Eventually she found "Buddies" >
 "Show" "Offline Buddies", but thought she shouldn't have had to do that:
 "Usually on MSN, they would appear, whoever is online on the top, and the
 offline underneath. I would prefer that way so I don't need to scroll."

 The initial experience for these people could be improved by changing the
 default setting to show offline buddies, with online buddies sorted above
 offline ones. By the time someone has accumulated enough buddies to need
 to hide the offline ones, they are more likely to have discovered how to
 do that.

Comment:

 We support `/etc/purple/prefs.xml` precisely so distributions can change
 the default configuration for new users.  Why is this not sufficient?

Comment(by deryni):

 I think the idea here is that we may want to change our default since the
 people who want it off are more likely to be able to find it to turn off
 than people who want it on are likely to be able to turn it on.

 I am however a bit concerned that the two quoted test subjects may both
 have had strong MSN backgrounds and that it may have biased there
 expectations. It would be nice to know if this issue bore out across
 people coming from other client backgrounds as well (as I think MSN may be
 unique in this handling of online/offline buddies by default).

Comment(by rekkanoryo):

 The official Yahoo client has the same behavior as MSN, except that the
 contact list entries are like our default buddy list entries and show
 detailed information, including buddy icons if available.  I am currently
 unsure about AIM or Google Talk and don't recall the behavior of ICQ.

Comment(by Bucharin):

 I was also suprised by the missing offline contacts. Of ourse I found
 them. Some maybe just deinstall at that point...

 Btw not only MSN is sorting by online/offline. I would prefere the way to
 sort like miranda, msn, icq (at last older versions) and many other
 clients do it: First online contacts in categorys, then at the bottom in
 categories the offline contacts.
 In my point of view, that is the most efficient way to allow ppl to send
 offline messages without forcing them to activate/deactivate the display
 of offline contacts every time or to permanently scroll through the buddy-
 list...
 It should at last be possible to configure pidgin to sort like this. Or am
 I just too blind to see how? I found a plugin to put online contacts at
 the top of each category, but not at the top in general nor any way to
 display the offline-contacts of a category with one click...
