[ANN] JRuby 1.4.0RC2 ReleasedThe JRuby community is pleased to announce the release of JRuby 1.4.0RC2
Homepage: http://www.jruby.org/ Download: http://www.jruby.org/download The JRuby 1.4.0 release ends a long release cycle in which we resolved a huge number of issues. The headline feature is a move to Ruby 1.8.7 support, in line with Rails' own plans to make 1.8.7 the required minimum version of Ruby. We have also gotten more serious about out 1.9 support (--1.9). The bigger applications mostly just work at this point, but we still have a ways to go on 1.9 support. Please try your 1.9 code in JRuby and help us firm things up. Due to the overwhelming feedback we got from RC1, we have fixed a number of reported issues (shown below) for RC2. We expect that this will be our last RC before 1.4.0 final. ****Please try your apps against 1.4.0RC2 ASAP and report problems**** 1.4.0RC2 Highlights: - Windows Native Launcher - Solves many reported bugs with our old .bat scripts 1.4.0RC1 Highlights: - JRuby is now compatible with 1.8.7 patchlevel 174 - New YAML parser Yecht (bug-for-bug compatible with Syck!) - Improved Java Integration Support - faster - new java_method and java_send methods - Windows installer - New embedding framework - Java 6 scripting out of the box - New org.jruby.embed package to replace JavaEmbedUtils - Many 1.9 mode (--1.9) fixes - updated stdlib to 1.9.2preview2 - Rubygems now working - Rails 2.3.3 simple apps working (2.3.4 has 1.9 bug) - rubygems 1.3.5 - Much better error reporting - shorter backtraces with less Java - Ruby-compatible syntax error reporting - 232 bugs fixed since 1.3.1 We want to give a couple of special acknowledgments for some contributors who went the extra mile this release cycle. David Calavera has done a great job wrestling with Rubyspec failures and coming up with patches. Yoko Harada has totally revamped our embedding APIs and created a new API called Red Bridge. This should address all of the reported embedding issues. Issues fixed since 1.4.0RC1: JRUBY-4036 Regression: Instead of java-based ThreadLibrary a pure-ruby thread.rb from stdlib is used JRUBY-4064 Yecht regression: require'ing rubygems now makes nil, true, false all tainted JRUBY-4051 Recieve error "\jruby-1.4.0RC1\bin\) was unexpected at this time" when i try use jruby or jirb JRUBY-4063 memory stomping error with debug JVM on Solaris JRUBY-4042 [windows] jruby.bat without parameters fails JRUBY-4055 [windows] jruby.bat can't handle caret sign (^) and question mark (?) in command line JRUBY-4058 [windows] jruby.bat eats % signs JRUBY-4056 unsigned values values should be stuffed into Java signed values like Java does JRUBY-4039 Implicit conversion to List<Long> results in a List<Byte> or List<Integer> JRUBY-4079 rcov fails with NullPointerException with JRuby 1.4.0RC1. Maybe set the mime type for the MD5 and SHA1 hashes to text/plain (similar to http://maven.apache.org/download.html and http://www.scala-lang.org/downloads but also include the filename) so they can be both viewed in a tab or downloaded depending on which you prefer? Re: [ANN] JRuby 1.4.0RC2 Released> - Windows installer Yea! When I install using the installer, it says "install4j wizard The Java VM could not be started" then a few seconds later, up pops the normal, expected setup window, and it installs normally. Re: [ANN] JRuby 1.4.0RC2 ReleasedOur backend stuff is being kajiggered right now so until we get that
straightened out I captured this as a bug: http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/JRUBY-4143. Thanks for the report. It would make it easier to compare hashes. -Tom On Thu, Oct 22, 2009 at 8:47 AM, Jon <jon.forums@...> wrote: >> The JRuby community is pleased to announce the release of JRuby 1.4.0RC2 >> >> Homepage: http://www.jruby.org/ >> Download: http://www.jruby.org/download > > Nice new site. > > Maybe set the mime type for the MD5 and SHA1 hashes to text/plain (similar to http://maven.apache.org/download.html and http://www.scala-lang.org/downloads but also include the filename) so they can be both viewed in a tab or downloaded depending on which you prefer? > > Jon > > --------------------------------------------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from this list, please visit: > > http://xircles.codehaus.org/manage_email > > > -- blog: http://blog.enebo.com twitter: tom_enebo mail: tom.enebo@... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe from this list, please visit: http://xircles.codehaus.org/manage_email |

Re: --1.9 compat mode and gems (was: JRuby 1.4.0RC2 Released)Hmmm, I think we will need to try and get some more information on
this one. Before we go any further trying to debug this, I noticed one thing which looks wrong below. You have two lines like: from /home/shot/.rvm/jruby-1.3.1/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `require' It looks like you are loading at least some stuff from an older version of jruby (1.3.1)? I have never used rvm so perhaps this is ok, but it looks wrong at first glance. Also if the rvm thing ends up being benign, then can you also do a --trace on the 1.9 run (jruby --1.9 -S rake spec --trace). Getting a reduced test case (like a minimal Rakefile with minimum specs showing the loading problem) would be super helpful also. -Tom On Sat, Oct 24, 2009 at 8:56 AM, Shot (Piotr Szotkowski) <shot@...> wrote: > Thomas E Enebo: > >> We have also gotten more serious about out 1.9 support (--1.9). Argh, I’m sorry, I really should’ve clarified this: I’m using an old version of rvm, because never ones break for me. I simply deleted the old JRuby 1.3.1 files and put JRuby 1.4.0RC2 there. I also had this problem before 1.4.RC1 with a JRuby built from trunk. > Also if the rvm thing ends up being benign, then can you also > do a --trace on the 1.9 run (jruby --1.9 -S rake spec --trace). I think my Rakefile’s spec task is pretty minimal: http://github.com/Chastell/art-decomp/blob/master/Rakefile :) Are there any environmental variables that need to be (un)set to rule out any interactions? (Note that ‘jruby --1.8 -S rake spec’ does see the gems and works properly-ish; it fails only because my Ruby-1.8-compatibility layer is based on the backports gem, which relies on Process.exec.) — Shot -- ‘“Cross-platform” used to mean “runs on Red Hat _and_ Slackware”. I added a hack to 1.4 which definitely fixes this issue for you. It is the wrong long term solution, but it only changes behavior for 1.9 and really loads gems exactly the same way 1.8 mode does so it is a very very low risk change. RC3 will likely be out tomorrow. Give it a try and report back. Since this was a hack and it needs to be fixed the right way this is broken on master and will stay that way until the right solution can be found. -Tom > >> I will try and look into this, but depending on whether I find >> anything or whether it is too invasive it may not make it into >> 1.4 final (in fact expect that this will get fixed in 1.5 development >> -- master/trunk). > > That’s ok, I’m happy with a trunk-built > JRuby.
