is it the first time you compile readline with gcc-4 ?

Stock 20080624-2.  I wouldn't be surprised if this were the culprit, seeing how
many patches you have contributed upstream lately.  Should I go and try to
build my own version from upstream, or just wait for a new release here?

  I think you should wait for now.  There's a bug in coffcode.h which I am
going to correct sometime in the next hour or two.
