[ARTWORK REQUEST] Sokoban theme for magazynier.

Hello,

I'm looking for a theme for magazynier. Magazynier is a sokoban game
for KDE4, which intends to replace ksokoban. It is fully SVG-
themable, but thus far failed to attract theme authors.

A sokoban game needs the following square tiles: wall, goal, box, box
standing on goal, player, player standing on goal.

At the moment there are no floor tiles and there is no background,
though support for such elements might easily be added, as needed.

My example SVG theme is at  http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/playground/
games/magazynier/geometric.svgz

I think it might be cool to speed-up magazynier's development so that
it might be imported into kdegames as a full ksokoban replacement in
time for KDE 4.5 release.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Best regards,

I'll have a look into it for you and see what I can come up with.

Hey, this is pretty neat!  I'd love to give this a go as well.  ^^

But given that Sean already volunteered, and plus your target is a 4.5
release instead, I can't really prioritize this at the moment.  Still,
I will keep an eye on this - I definitely would love a successor to
KSokoban (I thought that was KAtomic, but that's slightly different).

Any thoughts on a particular theme you'd want to see?
Besides of course the obvious warehouse theme?  :)

Is there any type of theme you guys would like to see done? :)

I wonder if it would help for us to throw theme concepts out there and
see which ones have greatest appeal.  :)

Here's the ones I immediately have in mind:

- Forklift moving boxes into palettes in warehouse setting.
- Space tug moving cargo into space stations in asteroid field setting
- Tug boat moving ships into ports in archipelago setting
- Dwarf moving gold into mining carts in cave setting
- Konqui moving faded KDE3 logos into KDE4 desktops in tech setting
- Ant moving food into anthills in microscopic ground setting
- Rabbit moving carrots into burrow holes in farm setting
- Penguin moving LiveCDs into computers in computer lab setting.

I was actually thinking of a tug boat idea actually. If you won't to do some themes, you're welcome too.

I also thought that it might be cool to reproduce the default KDE 3
ksokoban's theme - the one with pink crystals and green beacons. I
think some users got used to it.

Hehe, well I am getting tempted to start this earlier than expected.
This sounds like fun, and besides which I've pretty wrapped up Kigo,
have to do small revisions to Granatier and only a handful of textures
for Palapeli.

If I do decide to start this, I will let you know ahead of time in
order to avoid double-work.  For example, right now I'm thinking about
starting the ant theme first (since it's easy).  :)

Sure!
That could easily be called "KSokoban" or "Classic KSokoban" theme.
That might be easier to do still, and we can reuse the gorgeous green
jewels from KGoldrunner's Egyptian theme. And speaking of Egyptian,
there's gotta be a theme for that too (it's pretty much mandatory at
this point, lol). :)

However, even though it's still relatively early in the development
phase, I do need your help on the programming side to determine
whether these art-specific wishlist items can be added at some point:

-------------

1) Just like with KSokoban, there is only a single side to the player.
However, would it be possible to create an option that would allow
themes to use four sides to a player?  (front, back, left and right)

2) Can there eventually be support for some light animation,
specifically for when the box is placed on a goal?  Not talking 30+
frames, but maybe up to 4 frames of given durations preset by the
themer? And of course this too would be purely optional, in case the
themer prefers to use still imagery.  I think it would offer a nice
visual reward to the player for completing the goal, especially if the
animations employed are whimsical.  ^^

3) I don't think I personally will need floor tiles since my goal is
to use the background as the "floor".  85% of the background will be a
top-down view, but the remaining 15% at the very top of the screen
will be a small "true" background in order to add a little depth to
the presentation.  Here's an example of that kind of hybrid
background:

http://www.thegimcrackmiscellany.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/homm34.gif

Therefore, my question is: can we prevent the tiled components from
obscuring at least the top 10% of the screen, regardless of the window
size?

-------------

And I believe that pretty much covers it for now.  I hope we can do a
lot of good things with Magazynier.  ^^

I was thinking of that one, but a forklift has forks protruding beyond
the square and needs to maneuver to get its forks under the box ...
and there would be sound effects ...  Oh well, SMOP! (small matter
of programming) ... :-)

All good.  How about penguin moving large snowballs around?
Pushing but no pulling is a physical requirement there.

That actually used Povray and had quite good scalabilty of graphics
back in the day.

The background is meant to be one of those terrific galactic whirlpools
which nowadays are photographed by David Malin or Hubble/NASA,
but in KSokoban for KDE 3 it is shrunk and tiled a lot ... :-(

All the best, Ian W.

LOL, well I can't vouch for the SMOP part. :P
In my mind I was thinking more of a cartoonesque forklift, with mini forks that never extend beyond the tile border giving it a stubby look.  The sound effects would be awesome though,... assuming we can get over the issue of how to record, or where to find, our own sound effects. ^^;

hehe, I guess we can have that and the goal would be something like a hole in the ice the penguin is trying to cover.

Less realistically, we could have the penguin push fish into a bucket or igloo or something along those lines.

Because of the simple graphics set, we theoretically could go nuts with the ideas.  :P

lol, funny how I always get a daily history lesson on something that previously seemd mundane.  :)

Given the background style I proposed earlier, I was in fact wondering how I would go about it with the KSokoban theme.  Most likely it would include a moon-like surface (to emulate the gray floor of the original), and the background would be that Hubble/NASA picture in its original form (or at least as much as you can fit within the small size).

Hello,

First schedule: I'm just after half a year without looking at the new
things in trunk. I need 2-3 weeks to make sure that all my tools are
back in place and get up to speed with new features regarding theme
support.

Sure. No problem. That's quite straight-forward.

There's some nice new stuff for that in recent Qt, so I've heard? I
planned to add animation for movement, extra animation for boxes
reaching goals sound fun.

Any ideas about how to tell which part of the screen should be left
free? Metadata in .desktop file? Examining SVG data? I really have no
idea at the moment. Maybe I'll think about something later on.

I'm very excited about it.
