Can you at least tell us, how you have your address book configured? such as do you use a regular resource? (.vcf file)

also verify that your resource is checked (enabled)
you can view your resources in kaddress book, its the section right below your contacts (has an add, edit and remove button on it)

Also When did this problem occur? is this a KDE upgrade, a full distribution upgrade?

Just saying, it doesn't work, doesn't help us figure out your problem at all. Tell us when it happened, what you did prior to it happening, what you tried in order to try and get it working, anything to help narrow it down.
For all we know you got drunk last night and got delete happy, that is one of the things that could have happened because you never narrowed what could have happened at all!

also note that KDE 3.4.0 is over a year old. If you do have a bug one of the first things you should always try is upgrading to the current. _many_ bugs have been fixed since 3.4.0
The current release is 3.5.0

I got this problem in KDE 3.5.0, and still do in 3.5.1.

It happens during regular usage. I can't yet find a pattern.

Afterwards, I go into ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/ and find that std.vcf is now zero bytes - last time this happened, I also saw that std.vcf_1 was also zero bytes. (I recover by copying over std.vcf_2).

I am configured with one resource, "Standard VCard" which has "Format: VCard" and "Location: /home/david/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf". It is not read-only.

I've seen this problem about 4 times now - 3 times with 3.5.0 and once so far since I upgraded to 3.5.1. (3.5.0 was the Fedora Core RPMs; 3.5.1 is the RPMs from kde-redhat - all on Fedora Core 4).

This has just started happening to me too.  I just upgraded to FC5 with kde 3.1
Kaddressbook and it's integration with Kmail worked just fine in Kde 3.4
I first started investigating this when I tried to select a contact from the mail composer screen.  Only the contacts which I had recently emailed showed up, not all the contacts with email addresses in my addressbook.
Steps to follow to reproduce:
Start kmail and click on new message.  Click select (to select a contact).
Click on the close button on the select recipient window.  Click the close button of the composer window.  Now bring up konqueror on the same screen and go to /home/(your home)/.kde/share/apps/kabc and watch the std.vcf file.  Now click the close button for the kmail program.  The file size of the std.vcf file will be set to zero as you click the close button.  I'm not a programmer, but I think these two bugs might be related.
