Summary: xine backend provide more options
           Product: Phonon
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: unspecified
        OS/Version: unspecified
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: xine backend
        AssignedTo: kretz@...
        ReportedBy: dan.boff@...

Version:            (using KDE 4.2.2)
Installed from:    Unlisted Binary Package

In kdesettings/multimedia you can hardly set anything for the xine backend.
to configurate my xine backend I usually have to open xine player, make all my
configurations there and copy the one I need to
".config/kde-org/Phonon-Xine.xine.conf"
the worst part is, that "Phonon-Xine.xine.conf" doesn't list all options which
are available for the backend. for instance in the config file there's no
"audio.output.speaker_arrangement:"
so if you can't set the speaker_arrangement to
audio.output.speaker_arrangement:Pass Through
without knowing, that this option even exists. This is worse than it might
sound, because without this option you can't get dolby digital/dts through
spdif if you're using a kdemultimedia app like dragonplayer.

In my opinion the xine configuration dialog should provide all options for xine
(like in xine player). this sould also solve "Bug 187245"

Also it would be quite good thing to be able to configure video output.

Reason being that xv works crappy (scaling issues, tearing issues, washed out
colors...) with atleast ati cards (gl works great). Also there are host of
other issues with playback on external devices and so on with xv.

All in all defaulting to xv and not being able to change video-out driver
(which can be done with almost every other "player" or "engine") renders
phonon-xine pretty much useless for video playback here and probably for
somebody else.

Resovling this report would also revolve this one :
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=171955, which was posted ~6 monthes and
never even had any answer. Sometimes it feels like KDE devs doesn't even care
about bug reports..... or bugs at all.
But, instead of a bug report, maybe you should make a feature request. ;)

I'm working on an "advanced" configuration GUI similar to that one found in the
xine player.

I agree.

Having to research to find out that a specific Xine Phonon config file in
addition to the old ~/.Xine is quite annoying.

You will have lots of triaging when the advanced UI will be implemented : it
will solve automatically most of all the AC3/DTS/DD passthrough related bugs
you can find here :)
