Summary: jumpyness when selecting previously unfocused window
                    in present windows
           Product: kwin
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: unspecified
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: kwin@...
        ReportedBy: mrgrim@...

Version:            (using KDE 4.2.3)
OS:                Linux
Installed from:    Unlisted Binary Package

I'm using archlinux x86 binaries with a geforce 7600gs and nvidia 180.51
drivers.

When I activate present windows then select the same window that was focused
when I activated the effect everything runs very fast and smooth. If I select a
previously unfocused window the effect becomes very jumpy, and sometimes only
3-4 frames get rendered for the entire animation (w/ fast animations).

I will comment tomorrow on if this is reproducible on my laptop with an Intel
GMA965 card.

At the request of Zarin on freenode/#kde I tried the following actions. None
resulted in any change in behavior:

1) Tried different window decos; ozone, plastik, and web.
2) Tried no window decorations
3) Tried switching between two gtk apps
4) tried switching between a gtk and qt app

Two ideas from my side:
1) try to use a more recent NVIDIA driver. I'm using 180.53 and had problems
with .51
2) Is it in any way related to switching desktops? That is, is it only jumpy
when the new selected window is on another desktop?

180.53 has afaik been pulled back, 180.60 is current stable, and don't fear to
try a beta driver :-)

@martin:
remember the bug with the redundant tfp run on activating windows in 4.3beta1 ?
(you introduced it due to painting errors after the ARGB deco introduction and
fixed it by inserting an XSync() - but i cannot recall the id :-(

well this is 4.2.3, but could be something similar...

It was bug #191694 (thanks to git log ;-) )

The intel based system does not exhibit this behavior.

Also, and I'm sorry as I should have documented this, but I am using 4.2.4
packages built my archlinux and released a few days before the official
announcement. However, only 4.2.3 was available in the bugzilla drop down. I
_do not know_ if this behavior can also be seen on 4.2.3.

I'm hoping to stay within my distros package manager so I'm going to hold out a
couple of days on trying 180.60 to see if it'll land in the testing repo soon.

As for the nvidia betas, if 180.60 does not resolve the issue I will give them
a try after.

Thanks

I have just tried the most recent beta, and this issue persists.

I'm not sure if this is related, but I thought I'd bring it up. I also notice
severe slowdown when a lot of windows are in a desktop I'm switching to via
desktop grid. When moving between empty desktops everything is nice and fast.
Throw 4 or 5 windows in a desktop then switching to that one is always jumpy.

I'm also wondering if perhaps it's a memory bandwidth issue. I'm using a
geforce 7600gs with GDDR2 ram using AGP 4x. As I understand it moving large
pixmaps around over AGP can be quite slow, and I've also been led to believe
gddr2 is considerably slower than ddr2 yet still faster than standard ddr. The
cards memory clock is 270Mhz.

My understanding of this on a low level is quite limited so this is a wild
guess, and I'm hoping this hardware is sufficient enough that these kinds of
effects should be smooth.

info:
gddr2 is actually faster than ddr2, but your clock rates are pretty low.

i however limited the RAM clock to 270 and the GPU clock to 300 MHz on a
7600gt/AGP8 and the performance (though less) was still ok (512MB VRAM, though)

in general: if you have slow or limited VRAM, first thing you should do is make
sure that blurring is OFF!

but as this seems to be an nvidia specific issue (given intel works and the
systems are comparable otherwise) and somehow related on massive texture
allocations you should ensure that
- you use "Texture from Pixmap", NO SHM or even the fallback...
- few VRAM? don't use trilinear filtering, bilinear is cute enough
- enable direct rendering (this holds for more or less all gpus, but ...)

nVidea related stuff:
- ensure your GPU uses the "proper" texture allocation strategy
"nvidia-settings -q InitialPixmapPlacement"
-> Attribute 'InitialPixmapPlacement' (midgard:0.0): 2.
if not: "nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=2"
the effect applies almost immediately (you can try other settings, though)
- check the nvidia setup dialog "nvidia-settings"
in "OpenGL settings" check "allow flipping" (and usually you want "sync to
vblank" as well), maybe drag the slider from quality to performance (the driver
will then do some tricks on e.g. texture filtering - i don't know if this helps
in this case, though)
- in "antialiasing settings", just turn everything OFF (afair you'll have to
restart kwin to trigger this. if you need these settings to support e.g. older
games, you can set environment variables for this before running the game and
the driver fill change settings just for this game)

--- Comment #9 from Michael Kreitzer <mrgrim gr1m org>  2009-06-10 19:02:39 ---
Thanks for the clarification. MY card does have 512MB of RAM. Is there anything
that could prevent it from being fully utilized? I do use texture from pixmap.
I do use trilinear, but with 512 that should be plenty, right?  I'll try
disabling it anyways. Direct rendering is enabled. I do not use blur.

I do enable vsync and flipping. I have anti aliasing forced to on, but I will
try disabling that. As for the "InitialPixmapPlacement" I was not aware of it.
I was hoping nvidia drivers were sufficient enough to function with defaults by
now. I will attempt turning that on. The slider is currently on Quality as
well, I will try changing to performance.

I will do these one by one, and I will report tonight if any of them help.

Thanks

I think I have the similar symptom on my system, I played with it a little bit,
and it seems that when an unfocused window is selected in present windows, the
thumbnail of that window sometimes will be erased first, then painted again
before it start moving. You can set the animation speed to "extreme slow" to
see this behavior. So when the speed is normal, it looks like the selected
window disappears, while other windows is busy zooming/moving, then the
selected jumps out from nowhere and covers other windows.

It seems something happened in the SVN recently, though the behavior when
selecting an unfocused window is not quite as smooth as selecting the already
focused window yet, the repainting behavior disappears, and it feels much
smoother now, definitely an improvement.
