from time to time this happens:
after some time of using kde, i cant switch desktops any more .. it seems that
kwin doesnt redraw the screen when i change desktop .. i can only select apps
running on the current screen and the only way to get to another desktop where
app is runnging is by using the "show all running apps" effect... desktop grid
also doesnt work ...
the only way to get the old funtionality is by enabling disabling composite or
by "kwin --replace"

a) how do you usually switch desktops (shortcut, mousewheel, electric borders -
i.e. moving the mouse across the screen edge, pager) resp. activate the desktop
grid effect (if by shortcut, does attacjhing it to a screencorner still work?)

b) does any other method work ;-)

c) as you say "doesn't redraw" - does that mean the desktop is actually changed
(i.e. the resp. windows are present and receive input like react on mouse
clicks etc.) or are you just stuck to the current virtual desktop

d) does "qdbus org.kde.kwin /Kwin reconfigure" instead of restarting kwin clean
the stage?

hi
a) i switch desktops with keyboard shortcuts and desktop grid bound to a screen
edge - none of this is working
but hangs accure random ...
b) no .. trying to switch with the pager doesnt work too ... altough it
highlights the desktop i try to switch to ...
c)it seems im on the selected desktop (the one i tried to switch to) but i dont
see the apps altough they seem to take my input (mouse/keyboard)... so i think
its just a redraw problem. the only way to get to desktop and see the apps is
but selecting them at the "show all runnings apps" effect also bound to a
screen edge
d) i will try this next time it happens ...

Try suspend/resume compositing then (alt+SHIFT+f12)
Also which switch effect do you use (cube, slide, fade, none)?

it also works without alt+SHIFT+f12 .. just suspend/resume also fixes the
problem .. but its like kwin --replace .. it works .. but it sucks to do this
every time it happens ...
i use the slide effect ...

I don't think it's "just a redraw" problem as the screen would then be fixed on
other fullscreen FX or when you drag a (an invisible) window around.

Sounds more like the effectwindow list isn't updated (i assume the windows of
the old desktops remain but are not interactive?)

FYI:
alt+shift+f12 is the default shortcut for suspend/resume compositing - better
than open/close the dialog all the time
I esp. upcased the "shift" to prevent confusion with ctrl+alt+f12 -> vt12  =D

What graphics driver do you use? I experience a similar problem with the logout
effect after switching between virtual terminals on my nVidia system. Every now
and then it completely halts screen updates after what I think was a failed FBO
creation (Logout effect displays a black background and everything goes
sloooow).

i use the nvidia-bin driver.... i happens when i dont switch to other virtual
termials ... so it seems to me ... for me its not related to virtual terminals
...

alt+shift+f12 didnt work ... it disabled copositing but it seems that kwin died
right after it ... had to start in manually inside a konsole with "kwin" ....
