hi,

my real name is Patric Schenke and I would like to request the ID "booiiing".

I plan on resurrecting the idea of XEvIE, which has been without a maintainer
and buggy for quite some time and was kicked out in october 2008.

However, several projects are in need of a mechanism like it was provided by
XEvIE, among them are mumble[1], xbindkeys[2] and probably some
accessibility-developers would be happy to see it, too.
At least mumble includes another way of getting events: they poll XQueryKeymap
in a tight loop and check for changes. This method cannot be preferred because
it wastes a lot of CPU and isn't even reliable (for example the volume-dial on
a Logitech G11 creates very fast Keypress/-release events that would be
missed).

Don't expect anything in code from me soon, though! I just decided on taking
this over this week after reading a lot about/in the events, polling,
SDL-internals, X-manpages, mailing-lists and different bugzillas. I still have
to read about coding-style and -guidelines for X, re-read and fully understand
the old XEvIE-code as well as the specifications and all the things that are
touched there.

My aim is to implement v1.1 or any later version of the specification, I will
start a discussion on the (still existant) xevie-mailing-list soon after this
account has been approved.
Please find my public SSH-key attached, it seems like I may only attach one
file at a time, so I will attach my GPG-key later (however, it is already
uploaded to subkeys.pgp.net).

Kind regards,
Patric

[1]: Mumble is a free VOIP-system for gamers and would need XEvIE to enable
push-to-talk while another application (game) grabs the input.

[2]: xbindkeys is a small tool to bind keys to commands. The original release
doesn't include support for XEvIE, but there is a patch around at it would be
usefull to be able to control stuff while another application has a grab. (For
example being able to turn up/down the volume or other media-keys.)

the prevailing consensus at the moment is that a prioritised grab system would
allow things like this to work.  would you be interested in discussing (and
possibly helping to implement) this on xorg-devel?

I already noticed from talking with others that a complete overhaul and new
implementation would make more sense and would be very interested in following
the discussion and maybe even contributing to the final work.

However, as there would be no need for me to maintain things, I don't know if
an account-request is still in order. I might as well send in patches via the
bug-tracker. Thus I change the status of this to "resolved".

Thank you for your patience and time :)
