       RPM Package: vpnclient-4.8.01.0640-3mdv2009.0.src.rpm
Summary: kernel hangs after connection establishment via
                    vpnclient (Cisco VPN)
    Classification: Mandriva Linux
           Product: Mandriva Linux
           Version: 2009.1
          Platform: x86_64
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: critical
          Priority: normal
         Component: Other Packages
        AssignedTo: guillomovitch@...
        ReportedBy: tavvva@...
         QAContact: bugs@...

Description of problem:
When connected via Cisco VPN client, computer freezes during very first data
transferred via established connection (doesn't matter if ethernet, wifi or GSM
modem is used) and wrapper script turning the second CPU off doesn't help.
When ndiswrapper is used for wifi connection and I establish Cisco VPN
connection, computer doesn't freeze immediately, but after some very random
time (from several seconds upto several hours) kernel hangs or network layer
becomes unusable (network stops working) until reboot.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
vpnclient-4.8.01.0640-3mdv2009.0

How reproducible:
On a regular basis ... CiscoVPN connection with ActiveIdentity token on DELL
Latitude D620 using UDP packets.
tested with kernel-desktop-2.6.29* and kernel-linus-2.6.30-2

Workaround:
nor found yet

i have a similar problem in mdv2009.0
sometimes kernel freeze only when vpnclient is on

i found this workaround:

using linus-kernel i have no more kernel hangs.

kernel-server-2.6.27.xxx is not ok
kernel-linus-smp-2.6.27.xxx is ok.

I was thinking about compiling my own kernel working with the buggy Cisco VPN
client, because there is no replacement for this piece of crap when the company
uses CiscoVPN with ActiveIdentity tokens. They offers Windows as a solution ...
The freezes are probably caused by the internet connection, because sometimes
it freezes for couple of seconds in Windows too, but then it works again ....
unfortunately not in Linux.

I have exactly the same freeze issue here. Additionaly, the module doesn't
build with 2.6.31 kernels. Fortunatly, we can use vpnc instead.

Comment #2: how would recompile your kernel make situation better ?

Question:
>Comment #2: how would recompile your kernel make situation better ?

Answer:
>It looks like the crashing depends on a kernel configuration ...
>maybe some pointer related bug causes violent overwriting
>of a different part of memory :D :D :D LOL ... I just wanna try it
>because i neeed it!!!! vpnc doesn't work with our VPN server solution
>I am not sure, but I think I wasn't facing the crashes when I had 2009.0 and kernel 2.6.27 ....

Ohhhh guys .... sorry and thanks .....

I tried the latest vpnc again and it works ... the problem was in a group
password .... it is encoded as a hex-string in the PCF file. So i used
cisco-decrypt tool to get the asci form and it was accepted by the vpnc ....

Regards,
Jaromir.

vpnc does not enforce the use of cleartext passwords, you can use 'IPSec
obfuscated secret' and 'Xauth obfuscated password' directives for both secrets.

Also, just because a 2.6.27 kernel works OK with cisco vpn client doesn't mean
playing with 2.6.29 compilation options will help. I'd rather try different
kernels: as per comment #1, kernel-linus seems to have different result, for
instance.

I tried the kernel-linus-2.6.30-2 and the result was worse in my case ... I'll
try the 2.6.29.2 then :)

Regarding the cleartext password .... it's not a problem at all ... I just
didn't know ...

anyway ... vpnc is still disconnecting me, but the system doesn't hang and I
can connect again ...

Try preveious vpnc version (0.5.1), it doesn't suffer from the deconnection
issue.

I'm gonna play with a death peer detection idle timeout ...

Somebody suggested to try :

vpnc --dpd-idle 0

to avoid disconnections...

looks like the dpd-idle parameter helped, but then a new problem with a
lifetime appeared ... connection stays active for a fixed time (1800 seconds in
my case ... seen in the debug output) ... I will try to search on the internet,
then create a new PR for this if I find no solution.

  Product    : Mandriva Linux
  Component  : Other Packages
  Version    : 2009.1
  RPM Package: vpnclient-4.8.01.0640-3mdv2009.0.src.rpm

--- Comment #13 from Guillaume Rousse <guillomovitch@...>  2009-10-26 21:53:19 CEST ---
I just submitted an updated version of vpnclient for 2009.1 in
non-free/updates, that should fix the original issue.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original Bug Text:

Description of problem:
When connected via Cisco VPN client, computer freezes during very first data transferred via established connection (doesn't matter if ethernet, wifi or GSM modem is used) and wrapper script turning the second CPU off doesn't help.
When ndiswrapper is used for wifi connection and I establish Cisco VPN connection, computer doesn't freeze immediately, but after some very random time (from several seconds upto several hours) kernel hangs or network layer becomes unusable (network stops working) until reboot.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
vpnclient-4.8.01.0640-3mdv2009.0

How reproducible:
On a regular basis ... CiscoVPN connection with ActiveIdentity token on DELL Latitude D620 using UDP packets.
tested with kernel-desktop-2.6.29* and kernel-linus-2.6.30-2

Workaround:
nor found yet

The update is only available for i586, as it turned out the package is actually
32-bit only:

You're missing the update media for the non-free section, you only have the
release one.
