What desktop are you using? Please try to reproduce with a simply window
manager like icewm. Also, run xterm from another terminal, then, if it crashes,
some errors will be shown in original terminal

KDE desktop as indicated in original post. :)

> Please try to reproduce

I indicated it was infrequent. I get about 2 to 3 disappearances per 2010
install, alpha 1,2, beta, rc1, and first day of rc2. None since.

I launch xterm 45+ times a day. I thought it was just me since no one else
seemed to complain until I saw this;

last response

Do not know if you should have 248e package or if waiting for 249.
I just thought a bug report would keep xterm update from falling through the
crack.

You want to close this, fine by me.

  Does the problem still happen?

  xterm 250 is already released :-) The patch I added just
"silently" updated it to "almost" xterm 249.

  BTW it was very consistent on how to make it crash, just
that it took me some time to figure the "proper procedure":

1. Ensure there are lots of data in the xterm buffer
   ls /dev a few times should do it
2. maximize it vertically
   I do it with Ctrl+DoubleLeftClick in the titlebar with Windowmaker
3. Scroll some lines up
   <<this step is required to cause the crash>>
4. Select some text, cut&paste, etc
5. Still with some lines scrolled up, resize xterm
   Again, I use the same procedure (Ctrol+DoubleLeftClick)

  This has been corrected with the latest cooker xterm.
  But you may be triggering some different bug, or some other way
that causes a related problem.

I'll repeat it again. It only happens occasionally. Not on demand.

>   xterm 250 is already released :-) The patch I added just

As of noon today. Update from USA mirror carrol does not have 250 or 249. :(

> that it took me some time to figure the "proper procedure":
>

Hmmm, well now there is a difference to think about. I have a bunch of xterm
settings. My xterm.savelines was 4096 at time of crashes. I have moved it up to
8192

> 2. maximize it vertically

Under KDE I tried your test procedures with 1024 saveline sizes and my other
settings and was not able to cause a crash. Could be my using xterm.whatever
helps mask the real problem.

I created a "normal" account with out-of-box settings and could not cause a
crash with no xterm.savelines and XTerm.savelines: 1500 Which is what I assume
you have. You might look with  xrdb -query | grep lines

Testing in a "normal" account shows another bug. I could not grab top of title
bar for resizing. Corners, side, bottom would let me resize. Top failed.
Account was accessed from a Ctl+Alt+f2. startx -- :1

>   This has been corrected with the latest cooker xterm.

I look forward to seeing the new version change on xterm on the carrol mirror
someday.

>   But you may be triggering some different bug, or some other way
> that causes a related problem.

Yes, I am now wondering why /etc/X11/Xresources, /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources,
/etc/skel/.Xresources seem to prefer XTerm setting and some xterm settings
while the xterm application only seems to use xterm settings in .Xresources.

  I think there was some misuderstanding :-) I mean't xterm patch #250
was released upstream, but not updated in Mandriva.

  About resources, I have is a custom .xinitrc, with the contents:
$ cat ~/.xinitrc
xrdb /etc/X11/Xresources
exec wmaker
That is useful when running just "startx".
  When loading windowmaker from kdm, it doesn't mess X resources, unlike kde,
but maybe you could get similar behavior with a custom .xsession that just
executes xrdb like in my example.

  If I understand correctly what you said, the difference of the strings
"XTerm" and "xterm" is that the uppercase is a "class" resource. But X
Resources are a major mess, and the rules are very hard to understand :-)  If
you want to make it do what you want, you better copy the application resource
to your home, say $HOME/XTerm, and edit it (only things that are hardcoded
cannot be modified this way).

I checked my rc1 install and have the same xterm
$ type xterm
xterm is /usr/bin/xterm

$ ls-al /usr/bin/xterm
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 364900 2009-09-29 16:40 /usr/bin/xterm

Created ~/.xinitrc, removed ~/.Xresources and ~/.Xdefaults installed
WindowMaker

logged out/in

Using your test procedure would not recreate a crash and yet I have had around
4 xterm disappearances using $ xterm -version

  I requested an freeze push of xterm #250.

  I cannot reproduce any other crash, but I think I am not doing
the same procedure as you.
  My xterm usage is basically running some commands, and infrequently
vertical maximize/restore with possible cut&paste.

That is pretty much what I did. Basically, desktop shortcut script for root
access is

qdbus org.kde.kwin /KWin org.kde.KWin.setCurrentDesktop 5 > /dev/null
sleep 1
_user=root
_fg_bg="-fg white -bg darkBlue"
_cmd="sudo /bin/su -l $_user"
xterm -title $_user -display $DISPLAY -geom 80x24  $_fg_bg -e $_cmd &

Last root xterm disappearance was during an urpmi --wget --auto-update --auto
--test operation where I wanted to get an error for a bug report.

Last user xterm disappearance was a top grab resize to go back about 10 lines
on 24 line user xterm because I did not want to use scroll.

Desktop shortcut command is just a   xterm

I run with 8 Desktops so pretty much of the time I close the xterm as soon as I
am done with the activity.

  Hi,

  The cooker xterm package has been updated to latest upstream version.

  I think there was some refactoring of xterm code, what may have caused the
problem I experienced, and the problem you had, but that hopefully is corrected
now.

  You could also try a debugging schema in case there are still problems, like
by creating an alternate script, to run xterm under gdb, but that may require
an extra xterm to run gdb, or use some gdb frontend.

  Also, there may be the case where you can have a xterm opened before the
update that corrected the problem (this was a case for me, on a xterm that was
open for several weeks :-).

  If the problem still happens with the newer xterm, please reopen the bug.

Have all updates installed and rebooted.
$ xterm -version
XTerm(250)

Had 1 disappearance on both 32 and 64 bit install.

No pattern to activity. 64 bit was a straight highlight and 32 bit was a resize
left side and a highlight. Spent about 10 minutes trying to recreate the event
and was unable to do so. Both were new xterms with very little in scroll
buffer.

  Hi,

  I added Thomas Dickey to bug CC (hope it works :-), as Thomas may suggest a
good way of debugging the problem, or maybe already know of a correction.

  BTW, is there some core dump message of xterm in dmesg?

  Anyway, a suggestion is adding "ulimit -c unlimited" to $HOME/.bashrc, so
that it should create core files if xterm crashes, what can make it easier to
get a backtrace in gdb.  Just don't forget to comment it later, as it will
create core dumps for anything that crashes (I had a lot of coredumps under my
$HOME some time ago due to it :-)

No. nor in /var/log/prcsys.log

Done.

Bug report Severity could be lowered to Normal. Guessing was set Critical when
I hit a tab during initial data entry and had to use Back in firefox.

By the way, using KDE 2 for Windows Decorations and Focus follows mouse with
Raise delay 150ms.

gdb backtrace from core file, after installing xterm-debug an libxt-debug.

  I can try to guess what may be wrong, but Thomas should be better at it :-)
but I can help on whatever is required to give information that is specific
to Mandriva.

xterm-250-2mdv2010.0.i586.rpm

  Can you please try the attached rpm, and use xterm-247 in your scripts,
instead of just xterm?

  This is just a random guess, but if it proves to correct the problem, it may
be a good idea to at least temporarily have it.

  I cannot reproduce the problem, but it the older xterm doesn't crash, it
should help track the problem.

  If you can find a simple procedure to reproduce the crash, it would be far
easier also :-)
