[Bug 54600] NEW: Wifi defaults to regulatory domain US, even when all installation options are for UKhttps://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=54600
Summary: Wifi defaults to regulatory domain US, even when all installation options are for UK Classification: Mandriva Linux Product: Mandriva Linux Version: Cooker Platform: i586 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: normal Component: Core Packages AssignedTo: triage@... ReportedBy: vikinghat@... QAContact: bugs@... Description of problem: Using Mandriva 2010 RC2 KDE One, I select UK options for Keyboard, timezone, and Language. However the Wifi is set to the US regulatory domain - which means channels 12 and 13 are not available, as they should be. Using the Advanced settings in the Network Center to change the regulatory domain to GB, does not work in the One verson as a reboot is required. So "iw reg set GB" in a root terminal is the only answer - but you have to know to do this, and on occasion the regulatory domain gets reset back to US (possibly when the network connection drops out?). Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Mandriva 2010 KDE One RC2 How reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot from Mandriva 2010 KDE One RC2 from cdrom. 2. Select Language English - not English (American) 3. Select Timezone London 4. Select Keyboard UK Wireless networks on channels 12 and 13 will not be available to use. dmesg will show US regulatory domain being set. I guess the Language or timezone selection should set the default regulatory domain? (note I did try asking question in the forum first: http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=118354 ) -- Configure bugmail: https://qa.mandriva.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are the QA contact for the bug. |

[Bug 54600] RESOLVED: Wifi defaults to regulatory domain US, even when all installation options are for UKhttps://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=54600
Summary : Wifi defaults to regulatory domain US, even when all installation options are for UK Product : Mandriva Linux Component : Core Packages Version : Cooker Status : RESOLVED Severity : normal Priority : normal Assigned To: eugeni@... Reported By: vikinghat@... --- Comment #7 from Eugeni Dodonov <eugeni@...> 2009-10-20 12:44:26 CEST --- On second thought, I think it would be wiser to apply new regulatory domain automatically. There is no real point in asking about it, as nothing (besides the domain) is affected, and it will be automatically activated when network restarts for the next time. So you just select the right domain, and it will be activated automatically, with no further actions from you. [Bug 54600] REOPENED: Wifi defaults to regulatory domain US, even when all installation options are for UKhttps://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=54600
Summary : Wifi defaults to regulatory domain US, even when all installation options are for UK Product : Mandriva Linux Component : Core Packages Version : 2010.0 Status : REOPENED Severity : normal Priority : normal Assigned To: eugeni@... Reported By: vikinghat@... All looks good so far except the original problem reported above is still present: "I select UK options for Keyboard, timezone, and Language. However the Wifi is set to the US regulatory domain - which means channels 12 and 13 are not available" Thanks to the work done above, going into draknetcenter and altering the regulatory domain to GB now works without a reboot - thank you. Unfortunately this is still a workaround - if I give a a copy of Mandriva One to a new user I can not be sure that their Wifi will work at boot. Yes I know they'll have to go in and enter WPA2 passphrases, but not seeing their network listed is not going to encourage them. So sorry that is why I've reopened this report. Perhaps if the current software architecture does not allow the regulatory domain to be automatically assigned based on the users (language/timezone/keyboard/etc) selections then a note is needed in the release notes? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Bug Text: Description of problem: Using Mandriva 2010 RC2 KDE One, I select UK options for Keyboard, timezone, and Language. [Bug 54600] REOPENED: Wifi defaults to regulatory domain US, even when all installation options are for UKhttps://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=54600
Summary : Wifi defaults to regulatory domain US, even when all installation options are for UK Product : Mandriva Linux Component : Core Packages Version : 2010.0 Status : REOPENED Severity : major Priority : normal Assigned To: eugeni@... Reported By: vikinghat@... Chris Hammond <vikinghat@...> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Severity|normal |major --- Comment #12 from Chris Hammond <vikinghat@...> 2009-11-05 10:52:59 CEST --- Good - except.... I went ahead and downloaded the Mandriva 2010.0 Free DVD and installed it to Hard disk, with a USB Wifi stick attached as normal. The regulatory domain is stuck on US - no matter what the setting in the Advanced settings (it actually had GB in the advanced setting when I first looked). dmesg shows the regulatory domain set to GB and then later set to US, with no further changes. Restarting the network had no effect. iw reg set GB, had no effect (or JP or 00). dmesg showed no further updates to the regulatory domain. Removing the USB wifi stick did not help, and bizarrely removing the kernel modules for the wifi (zd1211rw, mac80211, cfg80211) just results in them reappearing seconds later - but the USB wifi stick is disconnected. So I manually added wifi network settings (SSID and WPA2 passphrase) in draknetcenter, in the hope that network would connect on channel 13 during boot. Reboot - still no good Next reboot the PC with the USB wifi stick disconnected, and then plugging in the USB wifi stick, dmesg showed regulatory domain GB. Then launched draknetcenter, my wifi AP on channel 13 is not listed - check dmesg and a regulatory domain change to US has happened, but Advanced settings of draknetcenter still says GB. I repeated this last reboot step a couple of times - it looks like the act of opening draknetcenter is causing the change in regulatory domain to US - no matter what the setting of regulatory domain in the advanced settings of draknetcenter. Once draknetcenter is opened dmesg shows a change to US. Then I find that iw reg set GB works, and Wifi connects on channel 13 - very odd. Have just powered on PC again with USB wifi stick plugged in, again the switch to US regulatory domain occurs. iw reg set GB does nothing. Removed USB wifi stick. Removed the kernel modules for wifi (zd1211rw, mac80211, cfg80211) they actually stay gone this time, inserted USB wifi stick, dmesg shows regulatory domain US. Used "iw reg set GB" and this time dmesg shows the regulatory domain switches to GB. So Mandriva 2010.0 One cdrom honours the dracknetcenter Advanced setting for regulatory domain, but an install from Free DVD does not. Help! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Bug Text: Description of problem: Using Mandriva 2010 RC2 KDE One, I select UK options for Keyboard, timezone, and Language. However the Wifi is set to the US regulatory domain - which means channels 12 and 13 are not available, as they should be. [Bug 54600] REOPENED: Wifi defaults to regulatory domain US, even when all installation options are for UKhttps://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=54600
Summary : Wifi defaults to regulatory domain US, even when all installation options are for UK Product : Mandriva Linux Component : Core Packages Version : 2010.0 Status : REOPENED Severity : major Priority : normal Assigned To: eugeni@... Reported By: vikinghat@... --- Comment #13 from Chris Hammond <vikinghat@...> 2009-11-07 08:51:28 CEST --- After a lot of trial and error I have workaround for my PC with Mandriva 2010.0 KDE installed on the hard drive (with wifi on channel 13 from a USB stick that uses the zd1211rw kernel module), put the following lines into /etc/rc.d/rc.local rmmod zd1211rw && rmmod mac80211 && rmmod cfg80211 sleep 8 iw reg set GB It's a bit nasty, and the sleep time may need changing to be more reliable, but so far it is working with no user interaction required. Could still do with a proper fix - there's been one incident after 3-4 hours where the regulatory domain was switched back to US - no idea why yet - and I guess that may happen again. Note this PC is setup to autologin into a user account at boot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Bug Text: Description of problem: Using Mandriva 2010 RC2 KDE One, I select UK options for Keyboard, timezone, and Language. Reported By: vikinghat@... nimrod@... changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |nimrod@... --- Comment #17 from nimrod@... 2009-11-14 21:17:51 CEST --- Hi, I just installed Mandriva 2010.0 One from Live-CD (Final release) and noticed this Bug while searching for another wireless-related bug i submitted today ;) The workaround you've built in works flawless for me, but as far as I understand this issue the regulatory domain should be set during install by a script. There's already a Questionbox to determine the locales-packages, so it should be possible. (to be sure you can alternatively take the answer from the questionbox about the time domain. i can think of a few reasons to use a different language but i wouldn't deliberately set my machine for a wrong timezone.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Bug Text: Description of problem: Using Mandriva 2010 RC2 KDE One, I select UK options for Keyboard, timezone, and Language.
