It seems that samba users are not saved. They dispeared rapidly all the time.

I can confirm this.

In draksambashare, if I add a samba user :

1) When I click on OK, after choosing the user (marj) and the password, I have
a message in the console :
User marj password set to none.

2) If I quit draksambashare and run it again, the added user has disappeared.

I think the bug is related to a change of passdb backend in samba 3.4.0. See
the release notes :

Indeed, now smbpasswd does not adds new users to /etc/samba/smbpasswd.

From the samba-3.4.0 release notes:
!!! ATTENTION !!!
The default passdb backend has been changed to 'tdbsam'! That breaks existing
setups using the 'smbpasswd' backend without explicit declaration! Please use
'passdb backend = smbpasswd' if you would like to stick to the 'smbpasswd'
backend or convert your smbpasswd entries using e.g. 'pdbedit -i smbpasswd -e
tdbsam'.

Adding samba maintainer to hear what he suggests..

After a quick investigation, looks like one has to run 'pdbedit -w -L' with
newer backend to list all users, instead of looking at smbpasswd file.

pdbedit should have been used since samba 3.0.0, as other backends could have
been supported (tdbsam, ldapsam etc.). Since 3.0.0, this tool could only have
worked with the default samba configuration, while users could have changed sam
backends.

Eugeni, beware the 'debug level' when using pdbedit (I think some/all errors
are logged to stdout).

See also bug #55499 (dupe of this one?) and bug #55415 (and note in errata) for
other possible options/implications.

For samba4, there are python bindings to some samba libraries, and I think some
wrappers to work with samba3 as well, not sure about perl bindings.

Please take into account password expiry policies as well ...

This was a one-line fix. To test it, try modifying /usr/sbin/draksambashare
like this:

Other functionalities (changing password, adding/deleting users, and so on) are

It works to add and remove a user. Thanks !

But when I try to modify user options on a shared folder (I want to specify
access mode and don't want a public shared folder), I got an error message :
"Please create this Samba user : marj".

So there's something else to fix ;-)

Now, that's OK :-) No more error message. And I've tested the access to the
shared folder within windows XP : it works (it asks a login / password, since I
autorized only one Samba user).

Description of problem: I would like to share a folder from mandriva 2010 with a Windows vista PC, but it doesn't work following strictly mandriva official manuals.
