My exim is not following standard retry rules - it is often failing email when
remote host uses graylisting.

As you see exim gets 450 and is immidietially failing email instead of trying
later.

Im running exim 4.68 with assp.

I think same thing happened few versions before but im running latest :/

Same here (same exim version, no assp). In my case at least, it's _not_ the
behavior per 32.10 as suggested in bug #12 as far as I can tell. (The receiving
MTA for fastmail.fm doesn't return temporary failure for four days, as would be
required for that, it accepts the mail in couple of hours. But there may be
several emails to the same recipient waiting to pass greylisting.)

I'm seeing behaviour very like this, and rather than opening a new bug, I
thought it best to reopen this one.

I'm using debian's version 4.69-6 of exim4-daemon-heavy.

This is very much an intermittent thing, so it's going to be hard to
reproduce... however, here (reject.txt) is a message being rejected
immediately. (Email addresses have been changed to protect the
guilty^Winnocent, and this mail had a bunch of other recipients which I've also
elided from the log).

The retry database shows the following for this address:

  R:xxx@...:<xxx@...> -44 13133 SMTP error from
remote mail server after RCPT TO:<xxx@...>: host
in2.smtp.messagingengine.com [74.52.187.90]: 451 4.7.1 <xxx@fa

Looking at the logs for 4th March, there was indeed a message which failed at
13:51:29 - but it got retried and subsequently delivered.

Hi,

I'm also seeing the same issue, bue due to transient dns lookup timeouts. I
have some monitoring emails mailed to me every 15 minutes during the afternoon.
Most of these get through but occassionally one doesn't. e.g.

One email at 20:15 and one at 20:45 reached me with no problem. The only retry
rule I have is:

Running the command "exinext dialogue.net" gives:

  first failed: 01-Jun-2009 18:45:41
  last tried:   06-Jun-2009 20:30:41
  next try at:  07-Jun-2009 02:30:41
  past final cutoff time

There was a failed message to my email on 1st June at 18:45, but there have
been many successful emails since then. I believe this server is running Exim
4.63.

Please upgrade to 4.67 or higher, which fix a bug relating to previous
successes not clearing a retry failure.

Is there something more I can try to remedy this bug.  I see it often on my
mail MX's.  I run a isp and I would like to know if there is a fix to this bug
planned and if so where can I get it to apply it or what milestone is it gona

Thinking out loud a bit here, but I wonder if this may be related to the DBM
bug we're seeing on FreeBSD?

It strikes me that if we have a wrinkle which affects one OS then it might
affect others, too, but in a different way. If there's clear information in one
of the hints databases (retry) which isn't being updated properly, then that
leads me towards the DBM code.

I've been wrong before, mind you.

We have similar problem with the retry rules here.

1. E-Mail goes out an rejected with 450 18:28:18

SMTP error from remote mail server after RCPT TO:<xxx@...>: host
mx.xxxxxx.com [151.XXX.XX.XXX]: 450 4.7.1 <xxx@...>: Recipient address
rejected: Policy Rejection- Greylisted, please try later (see
http://www.greylisting.org).

2. 10 seconds later 18:28:28 exim tries again to send and also failed with
message above because the time for second mail is too short.

3. The email will not again send after these two times.


exinext xxx@... bring us the following:

first failed: 26-Aug-2009 18:28:18

We think that the exim retry configuration seems not to work properly. We have
also the same problem if we use only the standard retry rule  *   *  F,2h,15m;

We have the same problem over here and to mee it occurs if this has to do with
several MX hosts for a mail domain. We had some cases recently where the first
tried MX hosts returned back a 450 due to greylisting and the last two refused
the connection completely. After that the mail instantly went into "retry
timeout exceeded" and was bounced back. Could it be, that the "Connection
refused" errors for the host are adding up so that at some time it leads to
immediate bounces even if some other MX hosts only defer the mail?
