[Cooker] [2009.1] Open Office Performance Issues

Hi,
I am noticing severe performance issues with Open Office in 2009.1.
After running ktorrent all night, if I open Writer its performance is
abysmal. It takes forever to activate and honour menu selections, file
open dialogues are slow to open and button selection takes forever to
actually action, physical loading and saving of files is very slow and,
scrolling is very intermittent (dragging the scroll bar starts, stops
then jumps).
Its possible this is tied to gtk as the kicker performance is not
real good anyway. When I click on kicker I get a black solid rectangular
block displayed where the menu is going to display for about 2-3 seconds
before the menu shows, and then the menu is surrounded by a black
rectangle. The loading of a bash shell is extremely slow also.
Top indicates the heaviest cpu user is knotify4 at 2%, my 1GB of
memory has about 48k free, and the 748 MB of swap space has about 48M
used. The swap space is the first of two partitions the same size, but
the second partition is unusable because harddrake in both cooker and
2009.1 have stuffed it (both assign an invalid UUID). I have checked
gl_conf and it is set to user the accelerated nvidia drivers. Firefox
and thunderbird appear not the exhibit these issues.

Has anybody else noticed these issues too?

regards,
Steve

Are you running x86_64?

Pixmap leak from ktorrent?

xrestop before and after running ktorrent for a while should tell you.

I'm quite confident this is your issue: you lack memory so your systems swaps, this stresses the disk i/o so your system is being hogged but the swapping.

Use iotop to measure it, but having a bittorrent app + anything else has often resulted in a lot of io if your system has not enough memory.

Try stopping the torrent download for a while (1-2 minutes to let the torrents "rest"), oowriter should be usable as before.

Thanks Col, I'll try that if I have it installed. If I haven't got it
installed I'll try to find the package for it. I am planning on another
ktorrent session tonight.

Steve

I did make a typing mistake in the original post, the free ram was
actually 48M not 48k. I'm having the issues with ktorrent not
downloading (I have paused the download) and even if I leave things that
way for 1/2 hr and try again, I still get the issues with Openoffice.

Steve

I don't have any 3D desktop effects active. I have disabled compiz
because it was impacting general performance too much and I have the kde
desktop effects disabled in system-settings.
I have been running my current session for about 4 hours, having started
the session from a cold start and Openoffice runs as expected. I will
check after tonight's continuation of ktorrent the results from the
suggested applications.

regards,
Steve

my guess is that you could be affected by this bug too:

It is possible that 2009.1 is affected by this bug even though this bug
is raised against 2010.0. I don't know how long overnight ktorrent had
been running as I got my son to start the download when he finished what
he was doing on the machine he was using (my modem/router suffers
significantly from not having QOS capabilities), but having started
firefox and thunderbird, and then OpenOffice writer, writer is
performing normally, so I am not sure what the issue is at the moment.
Top is reporting 43M memory from 1G free with 38M of swap space being
used (nothing unusual here), Iotop doesn't display swapouts but it is
not showing any unusual disk write activity and is not indicating there
are any swapin processes occuring.
The only unusual thing is xrestop is reporting that process 6302 with
identifier Qt-subapplication is consuming 10173k Pixmap memory (ps tells
me this pid is plasma) and a process with an unknown pid and unknown
identifier is consuming 5120k of pixmap memory.
I will continue with what I would normally do in firefox and thunderbird
to see if using them actually does anything to the situation.

regards,
Steve

Only if you have qt4.5.3

I guess I'm not affected by this bug as 2009.1 is running qt4 4.5.2.

I am now getting this performance issue after a cold start of 2009.1
without having run ktorrent. Writer seems to run fine until I look at
printer properties, whereupon everything then suffers and, if I then
actually try to print the data never gets sent to the printer. Looking
at the print monitor the job is sitting in pending status continuously.
As far as I can tell I don't get this issue under cooker, but then
cooker is running later versions of everything, so that is like
comparing apples with oranges.

regards,
Steve
