This is indeed the best way to get more feedback
@Tiago: We can also relay your request for tseting on the community
forum (may be already done by Vincent by the way :) ? Is there some
specific test you want to be done besides installing
system-config-printer and checking that the printer is recognized  :-)
?

Thanks.

Yes, there are some triggers to recognize hp multifunctional printers
and to download and install firmware on hp laserjet 10xx series, and it
would be great if we could test if it is working properly, since these
features are supported by printerdrake, and we want to minimize the
regressions :)
It is good to remember the people who will test that this new printing
system does not make mandriva recognize printers that printerdrake does
not recognize. The same database is used, so if your printer does not
work by using printerdrake, probably it won't work in the new system too.

Thanks

I do hope this will be done ;)

no, unfortunately. Because of this I have to configure manually my workstations

Feature removed by pixel by design IIRC ! He was in favour of using
some magic script in  the "post" section of install.cfg.pl to do the
job...
Anyway, better open a bug report (but i'm sure there's already one :)
and assign it to the install@ team

i knew. But I never managed to understand how to use this post section
in the install.cfg

Hello

It seem to work fined with my HP Photosmart 3210.

But I see a major regression with this tool compared to printerdrake.
There is no auto detection system for network printer. I need to enter
manually printer IP address. Printerdrake can auto detect my printer.
So yet printerdrake is more user-friendly for network printers.

Lexmark Z32: managed okay; no problems.

Strange, it finds all my network printers (samsung's kyoceras hp) and it does
it a lot quicker then printerdrake but when it lets to chose driver there are
so few options, like no samsung and kyocera :)

What's the problem with it?
You just have to put some shell commands in postInstall

hmm, do you have task-printing-misc installed?
what happens if you install it, and then try to reconfigure your printer?

No change. I need to do all manually.

What you mean manually?
The models are not shown, or not auto selected?

I need to indicate manually the IP address. Printerdrake scan the
network and detect the printer.
When I enter the IP Address, the Epson entry is select for my HP
printer. I chose HP and need to select the model. With printerdrake,
all was automatic.
This is why I think printerdrake is better in my case.

Come on guys, you know this is a 2 shell commands setup, lets try to
focus on bigger things :)

For reference, to setup a cups-less client using libcups (as
printerdrake does), just:
1) urpmi libcups2
2) echo "ServerName server.ip.or.hostname" > /etc/cups/client.conf
That's all you need..

This is an open topic AFAIK. It is known to not be allowed to distribute
some "hacker tools" (as the lawyers called them) in some countries,
like in Germany. That's why SuSE, for example, doesn't ship nmap, which
is used by printerdrake for this autodiscovery.

That's a really big move, congrats to all involved, specially Salem :)

I know Salem and Vanessa probably handled theses tests on their shots,
but IMHO it's nice to make them public so people can try them out too.

There are some combinations that should work too, like:
* Boot with the unconfigured printer already plugged in (cold plug), you
should be able to setup the printer after the first graphical login.

* Remove a configured printer while on system, reboot without it, reboot
again and plug it back (it shouldn't trigger 'a new printer..' wizard)

That's what I recall for now, I'll come back if I have new ideas :)

I'll do some tests with my hp 1018 as soon as I finish upgrading my box
over here.

Thanks,
Marcelo

It is an open topic, so I give my opinion on the matter. ;)
If we don't ship all software that can make outlawed, we must also
remove ftp clients, web browsers, and bittorrent client which allow
customers to download illegal files. I forget tcpdump and wireshark
which allow illegal tapping of network.
A tool can often be diverted from its original vocation which did
nothing illegal.

In my case it wasn't I urpmi'ed it and now I can see all of them. It seems
that the system-config-printer doesn't require task-printing-misc

Thanks for your opinion, I'm with you on this but seems it should matter
for the politicians of those countries, and not for us, which should
"simply" accept it and take some procedures.

Still, you can use a damn simple kitchen knife to eat and to do bad
things, and that's why on airplanes you don't have access to them :)
