After last nights cooker update, when I boot I get messages about
devices pan1 through pan5 not existing. I don't know where these
messages are coming from as I can't find any similar messages in syslog,
but I have found messages from dhcpclient about renaming pan0 to pan5
and pan6 and getting a failure on each. I have also noticed in Network
Center that there is now an unconnected pan6 entry. The messages are
listed below.

pan is for personal area networking, a bluetooth profile about
networking. I guess a quick search on your favorite search engine can
bring you more information, try "pan0 linux", or you can look on
wikipedia.

The problem is that this service seems to be started now despite pand service
is not activated in chkconfig :-(
And a new one is added each time I do a service network restart; i am at pan17
now.

Thanks Michael, I guess this has come from some package I have installed
without realising it.

Hi,

I've got the same problem. I'm at pan10 at the moment. I've got an
Thinkpad T61 with Bluetooth integrated. So there should be something
that generates at every service restart a new device. Is there someone
else who has the same problem? Is there an open ticket for this issue?

I've got the same problem yeah. I figured that as I'd seen it discussed
here, someone would have dealt with it. I was at 14 but I just did:

rm /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-pan*

Which will reset me to 0 ;)

I would suggest /etc/udev/rules.d/61-net_config.rules

I have the same problem as well but I am up to 38. I have found that
these are created by the network service at boot and if the bluetooth
service is active it creates, in my case, a pan38 "alias" on eth0 in the
network configuration. If the bluetooth service is not active panx does
not get created. The other thing I find annoying is that when these
messages are produced, again in my case, it starts at /dev/pan0 and
continues all the way to /dev/pan38 before it gives up. I found this
situation with network when recovering from a cooker update causing the
usual dns resolution failure because it knocked out my fix for the issue
(I renamed resolvconf to ensure it was executed before network).

Steve

Pascal, I have check this file and sure enough there are entries in
there for pan0 through pan38. Can I just remove these to stop the
messages being produced at all, or should the action= be changed to
something other than add and, if so, what to.

Steve

Not rebooted yet so not 100% sure, but I think removing them will just
reset you to 0 until the real problem is fixed.... I could be wrong tho'.

Yes, that's what should happen but I didn't look at it or have the issue :)
