[DG: User Experience] Discussions Widget

Hi All,

I've been having a play with the discussions widget for Sakai 3, doing a
bit of local gap analysis. Being the forum tool I know best, I've
compared the current features against YAFT. Here are features of YAFT
that may be worth considering. I know a lot of them are obvious. I've
also been having a chat over on the k2 list, but as Ian pointed out this
stuff makes more sense when discussed on this list.

1. Attachments on posts
2. Rich editing of posts, allowing inlining of images etc.
3. No infinite repeating of Re: Re: Re: type subject prefixes on posts.
Poster is prompted to add a decent subject and Re Re etc is added if
they decide not to.
4. A Notes type minimal view mode on discussions where the message under
the cursor is fully displayed, whilst the others only have their subject
and authors showing.
5. Clearer replying. if you reply to something at the top of the
discussion your reply box still appears at the bottom. It's really hard
to keep track of what you're replying to.
6. Profile information when you hover over or click a posters photograph.
7. Marking of read and unread messages, with these stats being made
available against the discussion in a list somewhere.

There are more and as I think of them I'll post them. I also realise
that the discussions widget as it stands is raw and that most of the
stuff above has probably been considered.

Cheers,

Adrian.

Thanks very much for this Adrian, I'll make sure that it gets fed into the design process when we'll look at it again.
