How do I do what Dmitry suggested me?

Hi;
At CORE-2670, Dmitry finished suggesting me: "In your case, I'd simply lock the database file at the application level and forget about the issue".
I think this solution will be god, but I can't find how to do that without affecting Firebird server. I mean, if I lock the database file at my application level, then the embedded engine can't open it.
So, how do I do what Dmitry suggested me?
