[Fwd: Hercules Now Supports OpenSolaris for System z]Cross posted from the SOL-390 list.
-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Hercules Now Supports OpenSolaris for System z Date: Sun, 04 Oct 2009 07:40:53 -0500 From: Harold Grovesteen <h.grovsteen@...> To: Solaris on 390 Port <SOL-390@...> As of the Hercules SVN 5470 update level, Hercules supports OpenSolaris for System z, with the exception of networking support. The host operating system on which Hercules runs must provide Large File System support. Current plans are for Sine Nomine Associates to distribute the Hercules specific IPL volume for OpenSolaris for System z in conjunction with other Hercules specific content. Packaging and content details are being worked out. It can be expected that SNA will announce when the Hercules distribution is available for download. The following is the complete initialization and shutdown on Hercules of OpenSolaris for System z. /home/harold/hercsvni/bin/hercules -f /home/harold/Sirius/Build.100/prep/sirius.conf 05:22:08 Hercules Version 3.06 05:22:09 (c)Copyright 1999-2009 by Roger Bowler, Jan Jaeger, and others 05:22:10 Built on Oct 3 2009 at 14:24:00 05:22:10 Build information: 05:22:10 Modes: S/370 ESA/390 z/Arch 05:22:10 Max CPU Engines: 8 05:22:10 Using setresuid() for setting privileges 05:22:10 Dynamic loading support 05:22:10 Using shared libraries 05:22:10 No External GUI support 05:22:10 HTTP Server support 05:22:10 Regular Expressions support 05:22:10 Automatic Operator support 05:22:10 National Language Support 05:22:10 Machine dependent assists: cmpxchg1 cmpxchg4 cmpxchg8 05:22:10 Running on dev Linux-2.6.27.29-0.1-defau.#1 SMP 2009-08-15 17:53:59 +0200 x86_64 MP=2 05:22:10 HHCHD018I Loadable module directory is /home/harold/hercsvni/lib/hercules 05:22:10 Crypto module loaded (c) Copyright Bernard van der Helm, 2003-2009 05:22:10 Active: Message Security Assist 05:22:10 Message Security Assist Extension 1 05:22:10 Message Security Assist Extension 2 05:22:10 HHCCF065I Hercules: tid=7F29480B26F0, pid=4303, pgid=4294, priority=0 05:22:10 HHCDA067I /home/harold/Sirius/disk/build_100.191 origin=0 blks=125664 05:22:10 HHCDA067I /home/harold/Sirius/disk/build_100.200 origin=0 blks=4194304 05:22:10 HHCDA067I /home/harold/Sirius/disk/build_100.201 origin=0 blks=600000 05:22:10 HHCTT002I Timer thread started: tid=7F2925219950, pid=4303, priority=0 05:22:10 HHCCP002I CPU0000 thread started: tid=7F292531A950, pid=4303, priority=15 05:22:10 HHCCP003I CPU0000 architecture mode z/Arch 05:22:10 HHCCP002I CPU0001 thread started: tid=7F2925118950, pid=4303, priority=15 05:22:10 HHCCP003I CPU0001 architecture mode z/Arch 05:22:10 HHCPN001I Control panel thread started: tid=7F29480B26F0, pid=4303 05:22:10 HHCAO001I Hercules Automatic Operator thread started; 05:22:10 tid=7F2924D7C950, pri=0, pid=4303 05:22:10 HHCPN008I Script file processing started using file "/home/harold/Sirius/Build.100/prep/sirius.rc" 05:22:10 # OpenSolaris Hercules Configuration File 05:22:10 pgmtrace -04 05:22:10 pgmtrace -39 05:22:10 pgmtrace -3A 05:22:10 iplc 191 05:22:10 HHCPN013I EOF reached on SCRIPT file. Re: Re: [Fwd: Hercules Now Supports OpenSolaris for System z]Paul, you're forgetting CMS, a mainframe o/s that still requires /VM to
run, even on Hercules. kerravon86 wrote: > --- In hercules-390@..., Harold Grovesteen <h.grovsteen@...> wrote: >> As of the Hercules SVN 5470 update level, Hercules supports >> OpenSolaris for System z > > Congratulations. Re: [Fwd: Hercules Now Supports OpenSolaris for System z]I finally figured out why I thought this was an
inappropriate cite. What I meant to say was that this was the last of the freely available operating systems to be able to run under the freely available Hercules. The sort of people who run commercial CMS don't have a problem running commercial VM - they are basically a single package. You don't get a discount from IBM for buying CMS without VM, right? The sort of people who run the free CMS, don't have a problem running the free VM either. Again, it's a single package. OpenSolaris was the oddball - a huge operating system available free of charge - but a dependency on something commercial put the entire thing outside of the ability of hobbyists to run legally. I believe that makes Hercules in effect all-encompassing. Every logical combination is covered. Commercial - all covered Illegal - see above Free - all covered BFN.
