From: Harold Grovesteen <h.grovsteen@...>
To: Solaris on 390 Port <SOL-390@...>

As of the Hercules SVN 5470 update level, Hercules supports OpenSolaris
for System z, with the exception of networking support.  The host
operating system on which Hercules runs must provide Large File System
support.

Current plans are for Sine Nomine Associates to distribute the Hercules
specific IPL volume for OpenSolaris for System z in conjunction with
other Hercules specific content.  Packaging and content details are
being worked out.  It can be expected that SNA will announce when the
Hercules distribution is available for download.

The following is the complete initialization and shutdown on Hercules of
OpenSolaris for System z.

Congratulations. That was the *only* mainframe
operating system that couldn't previously be run
natively on Hercules, if I remember correctly.
Good to see that rectified. :-)

Paul, you're forgetting CMS, a mainframe o/s that still requires /VM to
run, even on Hercules.

I finally figured out why I thought this was an
inappropriate cite.

What I meant to say was that this was the last of
the freely available operating systems to be able
to run under the freely available Hercules.

The sort of people who run commercial CMS don't
have a problem running commercial VM - they are
basically a single package. You don't get a
discount from IBM for buying CMS without VM,
right?

The sort of people who run the free CMS, don't
have a problem running the free VM either. Again,
it's a single package.

OpenSolaris was the oddball - a huge operating
system available free of charge - but a dependency
on something commercial put the entire thing
outside of the ability of hobbyists to run legally.

I believe that makes Hercules in effect all-encompassing.
Every logical combination is covered.

Commercial - all covered
Illegal - see above
Free - all covered

BFN.  Paul.
