Hello, Folks-

I'm new to this list and have not been a Rosegarden user in the past
(I'm switching to Rosegarden because I can't get the Version 3 (svn)
Ardour with midi to compile on my new computer). Many apologies because
I'm almost absolutely certain my questions have been covered either in
this list or in the Rosegarden Handbook. I can't find a solution that
works however. I'm having several problems probably all related to the
same cause.

I use an Echo Layla24 and I'm using the 8 analog ins/outs. I am able to
connect all 8 Layla capture inputs via qjackctl to 8 Rosegarden record
ports. Rosegarden Master Out Left and Right are routed to playback 1/2
and I've also connected the Rosegarden record Monitor out l/r to
playback 1/2, both of which should be the proper setup for my card to be
able to monitor recording activity.

My problem: Although I can see activity on the meters for each input in
Rosegarden, I cannot get any 'record monitor' sound out of anything but
the very first input even with the multiple tracks armed. Also, even
when I enable record on the multiple channels (with the red 'lights' lit
up for the armed tracks, Rosegarden only records the first track, even
when the meters show activity on the other armed tracks.

I've verified (over and over and over) that I've got the various Layla
input ports assigned to different strips on the mixer view, and I've
double checked it in the  various places within the main track view. All
tracks are set to go out to 'Master'.  I get the general feeling that
there is a routing problem within Rosegarden but I can't find many
options within rosegarden outside of the mixer.

I hope I've explained this clearly, and I appreciate any help you folks
can give me!

Thanks!

John

Gah.  I can confirm this epic failure with 1.7.3.  Just goes to show
how few people have been using Rosegarden for this.  Investigating
now.

Looks like this (at least the behaviour I am seeing) is some sort of
refresh problem.  Recording multiple tracks of audio from one or more
sources, I see that only the first track appears to contain any signal
after recording, and only the first plays back any audio afterward.
However, the audio files on disc are actually all present and correct
and, if I save and reload the .rg file, the signals are all there and
all play back correctly.

I've tested back to 1.5.0 (any older release is too fiddly to build
with current compilers for now) and got the same behaviour.  My first
thought was that it may result from a race condition in finalising
audio files after recording, which failed to show up on single-core
processors but shows easily with multiple cores -- except that I think
I was using a dual processor (dual CPU rather than dual-core) machine
back when I wrote this stuff in the first place.

Hard to believe I missed this myself for this long, but I guess it just shows
I never record multiple audio tracks at the same time, being a one man band
and all.

It's really weird. I've never been able to get my Echo Layla setup to
work with Rosegarden so there must be some fundamental incompatibility
or stupidity on my part going on. I'm usually pretty good at getting
things like this to work, but this one's defeated me for years now.

I've always wanted to use Rosegarden because of it's
audio/midi/dssi/NOTATION! capabilities, but couldn't ever get it to
work. I've switched to Muse as a last ditch solution, but I have to
admit I'm pretty impressed with how well it works out of the box.
Unfortunately it doesn't have all the cool features I lust for in
Rosegarden. I'm going to keep trying though (after I finish my current
project). I know there must be some dumb setting or interaction between
the Echo hardware and the routing in Rosegarden. The Echo's internal
routing is pretty complicated so I guess I shouldn't be surprised I
can't get it to work right.

Thanks much for the input, folks!

John
