Thanks Guido

Now I feel stupid!

I had installed Firestarter, but thought this was only a GUI front end to the low level firewall which was disabled.  So I
- opened Firestarter
- stopped the firewall
- plugged in Treo
- it immediately asked me to enter my password (on the Treo)
- The computer then reported that the PDA was connected
- Sync CE Tray Icon appeared and now I can explore it with Filemanager

Success!!!!

Thanks again to you and Tejas for your help.

Chris

Yes it does :)

>From the one-before-last line it is clear that you have a firewall running
that is blocking the initial communication between the device and your
computer. Unfortunately I don't have the set of firewall rules that will make
it work for you. However, I would like to ask you to completely disable the
firewall (if this is an option for you), disconnect the device, and connect
it again.

After that I am pretty sure that synce-pls will give you more output.

Kind regards,
