*European Union. European Commission publishes a report on IPR
enforcement in third countries. *
The European Commission (Directorate General for Trade) recently
published the results of a new survey about the situation of
intellectual property rights (IPR) enforcement outside the EU. It
provides an assessment of the situation in 18 key countries including
China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Turkey and the USA.
Despite substantial efforts made by a number of these countries to
improve and strengthen their IPR protection and enforcement systems, the
number of goods suspected of infringing IPR detained at EU custom
borders continue to be alarming (with a 126% increase in 2008 compared
to 2007), including goods with a high consumer protection impact such as
medicines (+118%) and electrical equipment (+38%).
The report is a useful tool for SMEs because it draws their attention to
the risks they might face regarding the protection and enforcement of
their IPR when doing business in some third countries.
