[OT] DV/HDV camera recommendation ?

Greetings,

I'm looking to buy a low-cost camcorder with FireWire out. Do any of you
LAUyers have a recommendation ? I'd like to stay under $200US if possible.

Btw, I've just finished a review of the latest LiVES. It's got JACK
transport control now, and it is cool.

Marked OT to avoid the topic patrol. :)

Best,

dp

I bought a Panasonic PV-GS-65 about four years ago.  It is(was) one of
the least expensive 3ccd camcorders.  I have been very happy with it
thus far.  I think I paid around $400 for it, though.  Perhaps there
might be some used ones out there for a good price.

Unfortunately, the consumer camcorders now tend to be focused on direct
compression to Mpeg2 to DVD or flash memory.  This is great if you want
to upload direct to youtube, but not so great if you want to work with
some uncompressed video.

I would look for a miniDV camcorder.  Those tend to have firewire out,
and work with uncompressed video.  Sometimes your local big box
electronics store might have a good deal on an open box or discontinued
miniDV, as they are going toward direct to SD or flash memory
camcorders.

Hi Peter,

I'll look for the camcorder locally, then on to eBay. Thanks for the tips.

Best,

To ensure Linux compatibility, try to get yourself a device that supports IIDC.
Here's a quite exhaustive list (check the IIDC column) by libdc1394 author:

We had a lot of problems setting up a DV live stream using ffmpeg because our
camcorder lacked IIDC support.

I have a Unibrain Fire-i, which works very well with Coriander and other stuff for tethered motion detection, effectv, etc.  It was very cheap, < $80 US.  I've used it to run the Reactable stuff, and a bunch of other motion-based video apps.  I've also got an Aiptek flash-based HD videocamera, which, while USB only, has worked very well for me and is cheap too (about $125).  The Aiptek is for recording only- I just mention it in case you're looking for a recorder as well.  Definitely stick with the IIDC/DCAM/non-camcorder type if you're doing streaming or encoding or effects or mo-cap on live video.

The video is compressed, but it is a frame oriented compression (ie:
each frame is compressed independently of the others). 5 to 1
compression or so if I remember correctly, and as it is frame by frame
it is much easier to work with than, say, mpeg2.

I've been on the search for a camera head for a very very long time.

I've checked out IIDC, because IIDC cameras are the ones where you get
most "only heads" stuff.

I think I came to the conclusion that IIDC did not have enough bandwidth
for serious video work, like 1080p30 and 1080p60.

For serious video work, RAW video at 1080p30 and 1080p60 requires SDI,
as far as I understand. SDI also carries timecode, which is a must.

I've not been able to find such a clean camera head.

By camera head, I mean a device that only has a lens mount, a sensor and
an interface, like SDI.

This is a clean solution and modular. I can then capture the video
however I want and pay for any irrelevant features.

I've looked at a few:

http://www.iconixvideo.com/products.html
http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelDetail?displayTab=O&storeId=11201&catalogId=13051&itemId=97539&catGroupId=14572&surfModel=AK-HC1500G
http://www.ikonoskop.com/dii/

, which is not exactly what I want and has some serious price tags.

I find it strange that I can't find any more.

I've setup a wiki for my quest:

http://irc.esben-stien.name/mediawiki/index.php/Real_Time_Video_Processing_on_GNU/Linux_Systems

I've tried several mailinglists, but since you brought it up here, I'll
tag along;).

If anyone know something else, or more, please tell.

Greetings,

My thanks to everyone who responded with suggestions. Ah, another
complicated purchase. ;)

I decided to buy a Samsung SC-D382, a miniDV camcorder that has positive
reviews from Linux users. Cost was $99US, with free shipping, and I can
get cassettes and a FireWire cable locally. I'm looking forward to
getting into editing my own videos, but don't worry, I won't plague you
all with home movies of the grandkids harassing my dog.

Best,

dp

Hey there,

Sorry, I hadn't been reading for a while. Well, here comes the topic patrol
:p

And as far as I'm concerned, your off-topics always get pretty interesting.
I loved the one when you bought your flat screen (was it a Samsung you went
for in the end ?) Next time I need a TV or a sound card, I'll be sure to
ask you to make a post. You always get great advice.

:D

Cheers,
