Dear list readers,

sorry for bothering you with buying advice questions. Unfortunately I
did not find this on the Web. If you know resources please point me to
it.

I will get a Beagle Board I want to deploy as a HTPC (home theater PC)
for my grandparents, which have a hard time to learn new stuff. I want
to use VDR [1]. Luckily LIRC supports ARM [3].

Everything should be controlled by a remote control. Or do you know of a
more suitable device controlling the devices?

The HDTV will have a remote control too. They are used to using two
remote controls since the old recorder had one too. So this should not
be a problem.

Controlling VDR one should only need the color keys, arrow keys and
numbers. I found some offers for remote controls with big buttons on the
Web [2]. Could you recommend one?

Then I would also need a receiver which supports the remote [4]. Could
you recommend me combination I will not have problems setting up with?

That would be great. Thank you in advance,

Paul

PS: If you have experiences with older people and remote controls it
would be nice if you could share them.

Here's the list of officially supported receivers/remotes
http://www.lirc.org/html/table.html
There may be others not mentioned that still work or course.

Cheers

Amazingly enough, apparently it's getting there:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/02/xbmc-arm-port-teased-will-manage-hd-playback-from-pocket-sized/
Not quite 1080P nirvana yet but def. the lower fi stuff...  ;-)
I'm also considering it for one of my front ends.

Thank you. Unfortunately I can not judge which of the listed devices are
the best suited, that means will work out of the box, are easily
obtainable/buyable and work with the remote.

I am thinking about getting a ProGamma remote control [5]. I guess I
have to choose a tranceiver from the table with »any« in the »Supported
remotes« column. Will both devices work together?

Reading the archive a MCE receiver is a good choice because they work
and are easy to get.

It would be nice if someone could confirm this.

Thanks for your help,

Paul

Consider it confirmed. The mce transceivers and remotes are typically
my #1 recommendation. Its usb, so the driver auto-loads, the reception
is top-notch, it supports just about any IR protocol you throw at it,
and can be purchased relatively cheaply.
