all the switcher buttons or tabs. I need this in my application [1] to
hide the buttons and tabs during fullscreen. While doing this I
realized that the existing switcher style code was a convoluted mess.
So I took the liberty to clean it up a bit and removed the portions
covered by HAVE_GNOME since those seem to be quite dead.
Right now the patch is against 2.26.2, since that is what I am using
now, but I can rebase it on the current Git head. If you want, I can
break it up into smaller pieces too.
