My most favourite combined sensor (well OK it would be the Maxim
DS1923 iButton, but have you seen the price - I feel guilty asking for
a sample one), Sensirion, are bringing out a new sensor that has a
true I2C interface, rather than the 'roll their own' of previous
versions .

Downside is that they are in a DFN package - but I've sent away for
some samples any way.

Colin,

This is just a polite request to use tinyurl.com for links
that are long.

http://www.sensirion.com/en/01_humidity_sensors/05_humidity_sensor_sht
21/00_humidity_sensor_sht21.htm
becomes:
http://tinyurl.com/ygfomyl

Peace,
Mohit.

Do they not let you request samples for their surface mount or thru-hole
versions?

They used to, then they knocked it on the head unless you could prove
you were serious about buying multi tray/reel quantities.

Assuming the ones stocked by Futurlec (see OT thread) at AU$12.95 are
genuine (though they mention SPI interface and it is definitely more
like I2C) then for a one off, that's not too expensive. Cheaper than
Parallax US$35.00 and Farnell a ridiculous AU$55 - 75 each.

Better still, an intermediate length url that might even be able to be
remembered can now be generated by tinyurl.
Thus -

        http://tinyurl.com/SensironHumiditySensors

It's a genuine link. In the past tinyurl would not allow duplicate
shortcodes of the same page. With the choose your own url mode they
allow duplicates.

I try not to use usefully obvious codes for pages which are liable to
be of limited value longer term. That allows such codes to be used for
more useful purposes. For photos pages that will only have short term
use I eg add something like "zzz" at the front.

Sometimes the saving in length is not the main point.
eg, for a saving of one character :-)

            http://tinyurl.com/RussellsPhotos

Whether that is long term useful is a personal decision :-).

This has some advantages, but it also has some disadvantages. The link
itself doesn't say where you go when you go there, which is a trust
issue. (Maybe not so important here.) But more importantly, if at any
point in time TinyURL should decide to shut the doors, all the
tinyurl.com links in the archived messages are then dead. Not even the
web archive can help you then.

Not quite sure why it's ever an issue?

IMHO the proper thing to do is include BOTH the original link (bracketed
with <> so MOST email clients will preserve it properly) and also
include a tinyURL version for those clients that don't work properly.

Best of both worlds.

That may depend on whether there are some sites a person doesn't want
to look at - not that a url alone is a sure indication of content.

Tinyurl does have a preview option where it presents you with the url
before going there and asks if you want to continue. I tried this and
found the extra step intrusive. So far I've never followed a tinyurl
link that went anywhere exceptionally "bad" - whether wrt
'questionable'* content, malicious software or even ads.

Probably not so much a trust issue, as a "is it something that interests
me" issue. The real URL normally gives some more clues about the page
than the redirection URL.

I think slowly fixing or replacing all the outdated email clients that
don't know how to handle URLs (or flow text, while we're at it :) is the
better way to go.

The preview option will give you that capability.

However, the worst pornographic site I ever stumbled into, some years
ago now, was 1 level above a page critical of the "New Tribes"
Christian mission - wrt their Phillippines work AFAIR. The urls gave
no clues in either case. I found the "New Tribes" article while
searching for something else and read it with interest. It was
extremely hostile to their work - perspectives vary :-). So I decided
to see what sort of site it was on. I trimmed the URL by one level and
pressed enter. It proceeded to open up new windows at a vast rate -
each filled with hardest core porno and animated stuff and ... . After
several seconds of vain Alt-F4'ing I decided that turning off the
power was the best solution. I suspect that the software I am running
now would have stopped the incident - I do not run any sort of porn
filtering per se, but usually have extremely low stumble upon
incidents.
