That's pretty cool. The closest I ever came was thinking about using an
implanted microchip as authentication for the cat door. But I was never
convinced it would reliably work, since you almost need contact with the
cat for detection. Here is a link to a homemade microchip scanner. looks
pretty easy, as long as you know which protocol your cat's microchip is
using:

I considered that, but came up with the same problem - moggy being
chased by a ' how dare you cross my path type moggy' requires the flap
to be openable a little while before pet moggy slams into the flap.

So I gave up as I didn't want to power the pussy.

5 metres though should be plenty, if only I knew how fast my fat thing
can run (which considering he's 7kg is surprisingly fast)
