Follow-up Comment #1, bug #10273 (project xboard):

This seems to be a timeseal crash!

Follow-up Comment #2, bug #10273 (project xboard):

timeseal is a separate closed-source program provided by FICS.  You should
ask them to fix it.  The "someone at FICS" you talked to is mistaken.

I just downloaded the latest versions of timeseal for Linux from the
freechess.org web site (both 32-bit and 64-bit), and they both still have this
problem.

If you are using timeseal with WinBoard on Windows, it's the same program as
timeseal for Linux, just recompiled for Windows.  So it has the same problem.

Update of bug #10273 (project xboard):

                  Status:                    None => Invalid
             Open/Closed:                    Open => Closed

Follow-up Comment #3:

Although timeseal is closed source, I have an old copy of the source under an
informal NDA.  I took a look at it tonight, and this is definitely a bug in
timeseal.  In short, if you try to send a character greater than 0x7f through
timeseal, it corrupts the encrypted data and the FICS server closes your
connection because it got something that it can't decrypt.

It would require changes on both the timeseal side and the server side to be
able to accept characters outside the 7-bit range.  I'll talk to the FICS
people about getting a timeseal that throws away those characters instead of
barfing on them, though.

Follow-up Comment #4, bug #10273 (project xboard):

I assume the talk to FICS wasn't successful, or am I wrong?

Follow-up Comment #5, bug #10273 (project xboard):

It hasn't been so far.  It seems like timeseal hasn't been updated for so
long that nobody at FICS considers himself responsible for updating it
anymore, even though I sent them a patch.  I'll do some more followup on that,
though.
