I have little sympathy for broken HTML mail, but maybe it is a good idea to run the equivalent of 'tidy' over any HTML mail. That way the disgusting ivalid mess doesn't worm its way onto the web. Consdier it a defensive measure. It could become a never-ending battle with trying to deal with the latest abuse that arises. Garbage in, garbage out. Since it appears your need to deal with this problem is no longer urgent, I'm included to close this item.
