Details:

Avrdude doesn't have a --version option to display its version number. I had
to revert to asking my package manager.

Suggestions:

- Add an --version option that prints the version number.
- Add the version number to the help text that is printed when avrdude is
started without arguments.

If you call it with the -v option, the version number is
displayed.

Does this suffice?

Both -v and -V are already taken, and AVRDUDE uses only standard
getopt (as opposed to the GNU version), so long options are not
supported.

As I said having it in the help would be a zero-cost useful addition.
Apparently I couldn't find it and DID look in the help text.

You're right, -v works.
