Details:

I got a bug report earlier today about the difficulty in playing blindfold.
The user had to always watch the screen to detect incoming moves.  My initial
advice was to set a sound event for moves, but after consulting the help, I
realized blindfold play uses style 9.  As a test, I set style 9 and observed a
game.  The move appears in the console, but WB doesn't detect it so no move
sound fires.

Follow-up Comment #1, bug #27675 (project xboard):

Further testing reveals that on FICS, the bell can serve this purpose.  If
the user has a sound event for bell, and the bell is on, then that solves the
problem.

Still WB doesn't detect style 9 moves.  Probably not worth bothering with now
though.

Follow-up Comment #2, bug #27675 (project xboard):

Indeed, WinBoard is no help in blindfold ICS play. Of course it would be
fairly easy to make it recognize style-9 moves. But this would essentially
turn it into a cheating device for blindfold play. That is not really a worthy
goal. OTOH, it is still easy enough to cheat in blindfold with old-fashioned
woodware.

Of course we could make the recognition of style 9 moves dependent on
"blindfold" being in force, and grey-out the blindfold option when in
IcsPlayingWhite/Black mode, so that people cannot switch back during a game.
But I wonder if that is worth it; if people want to cheat, they are going to
cheat.

As you suggest, the ICS bell should solve the attention problem.

Update of bug #27675 (project xboard):

                  Status:               Confirmed => Wont Fix
             Open/Closed:                    Open => Closed

    _______________________________________________________

Follow-up Comment #3:

It should be possible to detect style 9 moves for the sole purpose of firing
a move sound.  (as opposed to updating the board, which would assist in
cheating)

But as there's a decent workaround with the bell, I'm closing as won't fix.
