yea, this is long over due.
Just wonder about sandbox rather than a sub module off trunk. Think a sub module on trunk and a default profile that does not execute tests may be best as it will be part of the default compilation.
what is the benefit of using the sandbox?

I didn't meant to keep it in the sandbox, just to use the project that is already there as a starting point (moved from trunk a couple of weeks ago). My original idea was to create a separate ActiveMQ subproject, such as activeio or protobuf, but submodule with excluded tests in default profile would work as well.

I'm not sure what's better from the Hudson perspective. Ideally we'd have the setup similar to the trunk, so we run tests against the latest trunk every day.
