 It's quite confusing for new users (even me!) how the Picard cover art
 functionality works. Picard has options in the options menu for Cover art
 after initial install, and a "View >> Cover art" option, but unless I'm
 missing something in my experimentation, these can't actually do anything
 without the coverart.py plugin also being installed.

 If you require both, why aren't these options part of the plugin? Or,
 given its importance to most users, bundled as part of the install, or
 included in core Picard functionality?

 At the moment it's very confusing, and even more difficult for less
 technical users.

 Maybe it would indeed be more logical if the cover art options would be
 moved to a configuration screen for the plugin.

 The problem here is that cover art handling is tightly integrated in
 Picard, but is of no use until one installs the cover art plugin to
 download the cover art. It's even possible that someone adds an
 alternative cover art plugin for other cover art sources. The general
 cover art options will still be valid for this second plugin, though.
 That's why they are located in Picard's main options and visible even if
 there is no cover art plugin installed.

 You mean with regard to displaying the artwork on details tab and the
 bottom right box?

 If that were the case, what's the reason it was moved to a plugin? If it's
 in the plugin for ease-of-changing/customisation purposes could this
 plugin be pre-packaged with Picard and version controlled alongside it?

 Nearly all of the cover art functionality is integrated into Picard: It
 handles cover art as part of the metadata, display it in the lower right
 box and the details tab and saves it to tags or to files. That's why those
 options are part of Picard.

 But Picard does not provide the loading of the cover art (actually it can
 load it from ID3 tags at the moment, but it seldom shows up anywhere). The
 loading functionality is provided by the plugin.

 This separation is AFAIK mainly for political reasons. You might want to
 ask ruaok or luks about details on this.

 But there are some technical advantages for this, too: The cover art can
 easily be loaded from various sources as long as there is a plugin for
 that source. So I think the general separation of internal cover art
 functionality and separate plugins is fine, but still Picard lacks some
 more options for proper cover art handling. E.g. the images loaded from
 tags should be used and it should be possible to change images manually. I
 think those things where all planned by luks but are not yet implemented.

 voiceinsideyou, do you have some suggestions on how to improve cover art
 handling in Picard in general?

 The problem is that those technical advancements are IMO minor compared to
 the hassle that has to be gone to by every single user having to install
 it; locate the appropriate plugins dir for their platform, stuff around
 downloading a separate file from a page full of other confusing plugins.
 And then the configuration/options are inconsistent with other plugins,
 and confusing in general to enable. The fact that these options appear
 before you even have the plugin installed is silly.

 It may be separated for political reasons; while retaining core technical
 support in the app, but if you don't have a plugin installed, options and
 buttons inside the main UI should certainly not appear (or maybe should be
 greyed out with a hover "A cover art downloading plugin must be installed"
 etc); that's just common sense in usability.

 This plugin is probably unique in that it is functionality wanted by a
 vast majority of the users, but requires extra work to get it working -
 this just dissuades new users IMO.

 It may be separated for political purposes; but I don't remember a
 conversation ever being had with the community about this; or any note
 explaining why it's legally necessary (if so). Other media players seem to
 happily bundle cover art downloading stuff?

 In any case; rather than ripping it out in the messy way that has
 currently been done, some consideration needs to go into the usability of
 what's left over if you don't have the plugin; and how difficult it is to
 get it working for non-technical users.

 This is more or less a dupe of #2622, in which luks explained that he
 wants to have manual cover art in Picard (which would mean that the
 general cover art options become useful again).

 There is a feature request for manual cover art in ticket #2857. What do
 you think voiceinsideyou, would the ability to add own cover art solve
 this ticket?

 Sorry, forgot to reply to this. No, it really isn't the point to be able
 to do it manually. It's that the process to install a plugin, enable the
 cover art settings, enable the picture in bottom right corner, and then
 enable the plugin is far more difficult than it should be. Half of the
 problem is how difficult plugin setup is; and could potentially be
 resolved with a proper plugin installation routine in-application, rather
 than having to make folders in obscure locations (for avergae-joe OSX
 users, for instance); but I want to consider the bigger usability picture.

 When manual cover art addition is added, it will be even more confusing
 for users, so this is just as valid as ever. I'd also like someone to
 explain the "political" situation before this is closed; preferably in an
 open fashion so everyone is clear. It seems other applications can ship
 with cover art downloading functionality from AMZ, so I'd like it
 explained why we can't?

 The other difficulty with the plugin being separate is that it's not owner
 proper by the Picard dev team and currently is out of line with MB
 server's functionality, leading to more confusion when Picard behaves
 differently to the server in cover art display.

 Ok, I see the point. This could possibly be streamlined. But as long as
 the cover art comes from the plugin there is not much we can do about it
 despite perhaps moving the configuration completely into the plugin, but I
 would prefer no to do this. Better the other way round: cover art download
 directly into the application, but that's not my decision. But I will try
 to clarify this.

 That surprises me now. Could you explain this better? Currently the cover
 art plugin is in the same code repository as the rest of Picard and it

 I didn't realize the cover art plugin was in the repo, so apologies on
 that.

 The AMZ domain-specific logic is (IMO) incorrect and not the same as the
 server. It always pulls from .com which leads to bad results and different
 cover art showing in Picard from that in the Server. I documented this at
 http://forums.musicbrainz.org/viewtopic.php?pid=4728#p4728 but never got
 the time to alter the plugin as I suggested.

 As I note in the thread, MB Server employs better logic in querying the
 specific AMZ subdomain based on the full AR rather than using the
 incomplete "ASIN" field and assuming .com will have the art, which is

 Well i have downloaded the plugin and placed on the plugins folder, i have
 it activated on the options from Picard and i see the context menu with
 the plugins section, but i am not able to display any option after
 selecting plugins from the context menu, so...i have the plugin and i
 don't know how it searches for AlbumArt...what am i doing wrong? Thabks!

 Seems like you are doing everything correctly. Picard will automatically
 download cover art for releases with either an Amazon ASIN or a cover art
 AR.
 You should enable the cover art display in the "View" menu so you can see
 the cover art Picard will use and you should define what Picard should do
 with the cover art in the options. Picard can embed the cover art into
 tags and save it to a file in the same folder.

 Automatically, if the releases inside MusicBrainz have cover art or Amazon
 links, as outsidecontext says. If you see the art on the bottom right hand
 side with View -> Cover Art enabled, it's working.

 albums from loading correctly into picard. (They just got stuck in the
 loading proces) When I disabled the plugin albums loaded correctly. Great
 plugin but would be even greater if this got fixed!

 Probably some error in the link tot the cover art itself and not in the
 plugin? I'm not sure but I just wanted to make sure some people know about
 this.
