They were sorted alphabetically. Following the release group update on Sunday, it displays very strange behaviour. The releases are still sorted alphabetically but only on a single page where the collection spans more than one page (requires more than 50 releases). So instead of having the entire collection sorted, some random subset is sorted on each page (e.g. currently page 1 runs from one 2 Unlimited release to a Vengaboys release, page 2 runs from another 2 Unlimited release to a release by The Who). When I reached my 51st release I wondered why it hadn't been added to my collection, but then found it on the second page, out of order. Also, sorting by title for an artist doesn't seem right to my mind, they should be sorted by date, maybe this should be an option. I agree with you about the date ordering, which would make the collection consistent with the display for artists, labels, etc. I disagree about release groups because at present you don't add a release group to a collection. Thus, you could have added only part of a release group to your collection, which would make it difficult to display and confusing. I know there is some issue with doing the results properly due to the size of the required SQL join between the user's collection details and the MB data (which are in separate DBs). However, this is clearly a regression from the earlier release, so until a better solution is found, the changes in the 2009/5/24 release should be reverted. But now the feature is completely broken and it is unclear why this half-hearted fix was applied. Otherwise I would have to code some extra tool to show and search my collection. I put everything in my collection that I have checked and ripped in good quality, as opposed to to put everything in your collection you own. I was searching for something like that in the navigation header. But since you pushed me to it, I found a collection link on the account page. Having a look at it right now, but for me it is even worse in terms of sorting. Sorting by year is nice, but not as the first key. Artist should come first. I personally use the year as a second key. For Label pages sorting by year makes sense and for artists too (because there is onle one artist..) but who sorts his own collection by year only? Everybody I know (who has any kind of system) sorts by the artist as first key. Note aside: I tried doing some tool to do the sorting for me, but: http://musicbrainz.org/ws/1/collection/?maxitems=5&offset=3 gives me a 500 as does only http://musicbrainz.org/ws/1/collection/ So I don't even seen an option doing it myself.
