Re: [mb-bugs] [MusicBrainz Bug Tracker] #5212: removing empty release groups should be an autoedit for autoeditors#5212: removing empty release groups should be an autoedit for autoeditors
-------------------------------------------------+-------------------------- Reporter: voiceinsideyou | Owner: Type: bug | Status: new Priority: normal | Milestone: Component: MusicBrainz Server | Version: Server 2009-05-24 Resolution: | Keywords: Browser: Netscape, Firefox, Mozilla (Gecko) | Os: Linux -------------------------------------------------+-------------------------- Comment (by anonymous): Can I point out that there are some currently empty labels which do exist, and ought to not be removed simply because there are not currently any releases assigned? They have (or if they've been removed now, for being empty, had) good info in their annotations, and were part of various projects a few people - myself included - were working on. Voiceinsideyou, I'd been going to run just such a script over a year ago, to remove empty labels, (before I was working on some projects myself that temporarily would be creating some) and enough people pm'd asking me to hold off, due to projects they were working on... I just hope noone has jumped the gun and just removed these, given that removing an empty label (as I found) is an autoedit, so there's no chance for the editors involved in projects which created these to comment on the remove edits, nor a chance for them to even salvage the info out of the annotation, or to add at least a single blocker AR, to make it no longer a fully empty label... -- Ticket URL: <http://bugs.musicbrainz.org/ticket/5212#comment:10> MusicBrainz Bug Tracker <http://musicbrainz.org> MusicBrainz -- the music metadatabase _______________________________________________ Musicbrainz-bugs mailing list Musicbrainz-bugs@... http://lists.musicbrainz.org/mailman/listinfo/musicbrainz-bugs |

I removed every one manually, and I only saw one or maybe two that had annotations and they didn't look particularly informative, and IIRC were at least 6 months old. Relying on a missing cleanup script of the server to stop stuff being removed is/was foolish IMO. "In progress" edits have no real place in the data set, as far as I can see. -- Ticket URL: <http://bugs.musicbrainz.org/ticket/5212#comment:11> MusicBrainz Bug Tracker <http://musicbrainz.org> MusicBrainz -- the music metadatabase _______________________________________________ Musicbrainz-bugs mailing list Musicbrainz-bugs@... http://lists.musicbrainz.org/mailman/listinfo/musicbrainz-bugs |

"In progress" edits do have a perfectly fine place... how can they not? Or are you suggesting that noone ought to take on any project where the scope of the project cannot be completed without it requiring a more prolonged period of time to complete than a single browsing session? Point blank, you removed what may have been (and in at least a few cases, definitely were) *valid* labels, simply because they did not yet have ARs or releases attached to them, and without any community discussion, or opportunity for input (as the remove label edit type is erroniously a *destructive* but *auto* edit). -- Ticket URL: <http://bugs.musicbrainz.org/ticket/5212#comment:12> MusicBrainz Bug Tracker <http://musicbrainz.org> MusicBrainz -- the music metadatabase _______________________________________________ Musicbrainz-bugs mailing list Musicbrainz-bugs@... http://lists.musicbrainz.org/mailman/listinfo/musicbrainz-bugs |

No-one else volunteered to clean this up, and or is there a precedent of creating orphaned MBID entities to store random text, so quit your moaning. There were only a couple such annotations and at most they had a sentence of text. There was nothing I removed that appeared to have any actual effort put into it. You're giving the impression I deleted many hours of careful research and this just wasn't the case. A single browsing session? Complete exaggeration. All the labels were months old at least. There are plenty of places where "work in progress" about a label can be kept - you may have heard of a "Wiki", or a web site. There is no need to create MBID'd entities if they aren't connected to anything else just so you can dump some text into an annotation. -- Ticket URL: <http://bugs.musicbrainz.org/ticket/5212#comment:13> MusicBrainz Bug Tracker <http://musicbrainz.org> MusicBrainz -- the music metadatabase _______________________________________________ Musicbrainz-bugs mailing list Musicbrainz-bugs@... http://lists.musicbrainz.org/mailman/listinfo/musicbrainz-bugs |

Re: [mb-bugs] [MusicBrainz Bug Tracker] #5212: removing empty release groups should be an autoedit for autoeditors#5212: removing empty release groups should be an autoedit for autoeditors

When you say noone volunteered to clean it up, there was *one* day that passed between the report being generated, and your removing them all. A report, as was suggested above, would perhaps have been a better solution, allowing editors to check them by hand, rather than removing them wholesale. Or, give some community notice - running a script to clear "empty" labels as modbot does for artists is, imho, a sufficient enough change to at least give advance notification. Either way, it's a problematic edit type, given that it currently is broken (treated as autoeditable), and also that there's no subscription-like heads up back to the editor who created the label (as there would be for an artist). I just feel that any wholesale change in how data is handled, such as this, where data gets irreversibly removed, should be approved by the community, or at least, have the community get prior notification - not, as in this case, notification after the fact. -- Ticket URL: <http://bugs.musicbrainz.org/ticket/5212#comment:14> MusicBrainz Bug Tracker <http://musicbrainz.org> MusicBrainz -- the music metadatabase _______________________________________________ Musicbrainz-bugs mailing list Musicbrainz-bugs@... http://lists.musicbrainz.org/mailman/listinfo/musicbrainz-bugs |
