[rfc] "XSPF" versus "Spiff", rename libSpiff to libxspf?

Hello!

I have come to a point where I seriously consider
renaming libSpiff to libxspf.  I feel instead of helping
the word "Spiff" to me does

 - might be adding to the "XSPF what?" confusion

 - "spiff" does not give anything XSPF-related
on the first 100 google results

So let me ask:

 - Is there any reason not to bury the term "spiff"
   for XSPF in general?

 - What strong reasons do you see against a rename
of libSpiff?  Please join me in planning a
seamless transition if that's stuff your
head likes to play around with.

Your comments please.

Sebastian

The spiff part has always been intended as a market workd, an easy way
to say XSPF in everyday talk.  While I don't think that turned out
that well, I would advise against renaming a project which has reached
it's 1.0 milestone and's been around for a few years now.

Your call, either way.

libSpiff seems only used by three pieces of software:
- foo_xspf (plugin for Foobar2000)
- Herrie (console music player)
- OpenMoko Media Player

Without saying that libSpiff failed, I don't think there
is not much reputation to lose for libSpiff, maybe even
win from a new name?

FWIW, i'm working on a content resolver atm and looking at xspf.
I think libxspf is a *much* better and more natural name, I never liked the Spiff idea.
Principle of least surprise and all that..

If you think so, go for it.  The transition won't be easy, though
(e.g. convince Debian maintainers to rename packages).

You're trading "being easier to find and identify for new users" at the
price of annoying everyone who ever worked with the project, i.e.:

-  authors who maintain software linking against it (they will always
need to have special cases in their configure to find out linking
   flags)
-  packagagers who need to rename their packages
-  users who need to recompile their installed software in some
   non-obvious way
-  supporters who link to the sourceforge/freshmeat/whatever etc.
homepages that will all need a new URL
-  documentation authors that will need to add an extra sentence
-  yourself, as you will always have to carry that
"libxspf (formerly libspiff)" in your software

I don't it was a smart choice naming the software libspiff, but I think
it is an even worse choice to rename it at all. However, if you want to
go ahead with renaming, rather do it now than later.

I think consistency in naming would probably do good things.
Function-oriented names are easier to understand.

A name change is slightly annoying, but I prefer the libxspf so I would suggest
to rename it. Perhaps keep both names for a limited period of time, so third
parties can adapt?

Just so you know I have just started the transition.
I'll try to make things go smooth for everyone.

Let's hope it all goes well :-)
