[scala] ScalaDays '08

Hi All,

Bruce Eckel and I are considering hosting an open-space Scala
conference, tentatively called ScalaDays 2008, in or near San
Francisco on the weekend after JavaOne. The goals of the conference are:

1. Community building - to bring people together face to face who have
been interacting via email on this list

2. Discussion - to discuss whatever issues the community thinks are
important, including issues about how to organize the community and of
course technical issues

3. Spread the word - to help people understand Scala in more depth, no
matter what level of expertise they start with when they walk in the
door

At an open space conference, the attendees first suggest topics and
then vote on them. The topics that get the most votes are then
scheduled into break-out sessions. Multiple sessions are scheduled at
the same time, and you can attend whichever interests you most. You're
also free to get up and walk over to a different session anytime you
want. There are no, or few, prepared presentations.

We would like to get an idea of how many people might attend, and how
many days it should run. Martin Odersky says he could likely attend on
Saturday. Bruce and I think that once folks get started we'll have a
lot to talk about. Three options we're considering is a one day
conference, a two day conference, and a one and a half day conference.
The latter could finish early on Sunday, like at noon or 2PM, giving
people time to catch afternoon and evening flights. We could also
potentially start on Friday evening.

Artima and Mindview (Bruce's company) will put up the funds and
organized, and we'll charge a nominal fee per attendee. We'd like to
keep it as affordable as possible.

We'd like to gauge interest. If you think you'd like to attend, please
email me at bv-jackrabbit@.... (The jackrabbit is because I
created this email for the Apache Jackrabbit mailing list. It will fly
past my anti-spam challenge/response system.) Let me know:

1. Would you prefer 1, 1.5, or 2 days?
2. On a scale of 1 to 10, how likely is it that you would attend?

Thanks.

Bill

Hi Derek,

We'll probably try and record at least some of the sessions and share
them on the net. Not everyone wants to be recorded, so we'd only do it
if we can get permission from everyone first. I think this recording
from the JavaPosse roundup is about what you can expect:

http://javaposse.com/index.php?post_id=199323

Thanks.

People on this list are from all over the world, not just the USA, but
I would think that many of the "super scala brains" that you are
perhaps referring to are currently in Europe. I can't see this working
- or perhaps you could charter a few jets ; )
Personally, I can't afford to come to San Francisco and I imagine lots
more would be on the same boat.

I thought people were discussing and organizing things here.

Seems like a valid thing to do, if there is enough interest in Scala
at JavaOne, that couldn't be addressed by another "Scala is fun"
session. Can we have a "Scala is scary, very scary" this year?

Guess I'm sitting pretty much on 1 on the attendance.  I'd really
prefer 0 days - However, if the set up was  multi continental
videocast simulcast,  linking up most of the interested parties, well
I might change my mind.

It isn't intended for folks in the U.S. so much as for folks who are
going to be at JavaOne. I'm not sure how any people will attend
JavaOne this year, probably well over 10,000. And they will be from

I'm not really referring to super Scala brains in particular, but the
more prominent members of the community who we can bring together face-
to-face the better.

Yes indeed, but the bandwidth is so much better in person.

I'm not sure how far along he is. I suspect I'm farther along than
Bruce, and I still have quite a ways to go on the learning curve.
Bruce and I would not be teaching Scala or anything like that, just
facilitating the conference.

You don't have to have everyone at a conference for it to be useful.
This is just a conference for folks interested in Scala who are going
to be at JavaOne. That's all. There will be other conferences in other
places in the future, and many of the people who can go to this one
won't be able to go to others held elsewhere.

FWIW, he's known of the existence of Scala for at least three and a half years, when I received his OK for my "Thinking in Scala" series of exercise solutions.

Why not  making a really interesting experiment and make a simultaneous open-space somewhere in Europe? I do not even think about video conferencing, just an exchange of the topics collected at the beginning of the conference. Would be quite interesting to see what comes out of the topic if discussed in isolation.

Problem with linking up with Java One is that not all Scalaist are so heavy into Java that they will go to Java One and for the others it might be a bit too packed - not speaking of getting budget approval for two consecutive conferences.

I won't be going to Java One but I'm a lot more likely to go down for
a cheaper, shorter and hugely more relevant "conference!" :)

Hi Oliver,

I'm a neighbour (living in Wollongong). There are a few more of us from
the wider Asia-Pacific:-

Australia (NSW, Queensland, Victoria)
China
Japan
New Zealand
Singapore
(apologies if I missed any)

If or when others come out to this region for a conference or the like
(ideally with lots of notice), we should hold something.

Eric.

You can add Perth, Western Australia.  Unfortunately for me there's a
good reason why it's sometimes called the most isolated capital in the
world :-\

Some IRC rooms (and emacs-wiki?) and such have maps of where people
live displayed on a world map.

I have no idea how to set something like this up, but it would be
interesting to see where people on the Scala ML lived. I would suspect
*most* people are from the US or Europe.

Almost all of my blog traffic at the moment is Scala related. Here's
where Google analytics says people are coming from (at least, the top
ten countries):

1. United States 2,001
2. United Kingdom 366
3. Germany 304
4. Canada 246
5. Australia 146
6. Sweden 124
7. Netherlands 101
8. India 100
9. France 95
10. Finland 84

Probably doesn't mean much, but I expect it's at least somewhat representative.

Someone name Arrgh created a Frappr map http://www.frappr.com/scala - if everyone here adds himself we get a proper visualization how the scala grup is distributed

That would be me... If anything is excessively annoying let me know, and if it's possible given Frappr's limited feature set I can try to address it. :)

Obviously it needs to be in Austin, Texas, this being closest to the

Unfortunately, I don't think there are quite enough of us around
Sydney for a Scala Users Group. What would you call that anyway, SUG,

At least WA doesn't sometimes get forgotten on the Oz map, like
Tasmania.
I think it is the most isolated capital in the world - still we like
WA because the mining boom makes us lots of money.
