Hello,

Would someone be able to tell me what the sonatype-work/.snapshot folder’s purpose is?  I have a backup job that syncs my backup server with the primary at night by copying the sonatype-work folder but, as I can tell, the .snapshot folder is not needed for the backup process.

Before I just disregard that folder I would like to know its purpose.  I don’t see any documentation regarding .snapshot folder.

Thanks!

Ronak

Ronak,

.snapshot is the name of the folder used by NetApps Filer
SnapVaults... is this directory on a filer, per chance?

Hmm, maybe so.  Here are the contents:

[xxx@xxxx .snapshot]$ ls -al

total 40

drwxrwxrwx  10 root  root  4096 Sep 24 06:00 .

drwxrwxr-x  12 nexus wheel 4096 Mar 26 11:48 ..

drwxrwxr-x  11 nexus wheel 4096 Mar 26 11:48 hourly.0

drwxrwxr-x  11 nexus wheel 4096 Mar 26 11:48 hourly.1

drwxr-xr-x  11 nexus wheel 4096 Mar 26 11:48 hourly.2

drwxr-xr-x  11 nexus nexus 4096 Mar 26 11:48 hourly.3

drwxr-xr-x  11 nexus nexus 4096 Mar 26 11:48 hourly.4

drwxr-xr-x  11 nexus nexus 4096 Mar 26 11:48 hourly.5

drwxrwxr-x  11 nexus wheel 4096 Mar 26 11:48 nightly.0

drwxr-xr-x  11 nexus nexus 4096 Mar 26 11:48 nightly.1

[xxx@xxxx]$ pwd

/nexus/.snapshot

[xxx@...]$

If I look in say hourly.3:

drwxr-xr-x  11 nexus nexus  4096 Mar 26 11:48 .

drwxrwxrwx  10 root  root   4096 Sep 24 06:00 ..

drwxr-xr-x   2 root  root   4096 Sep 23 01:51 conf

drwxr-xr-x  85 root  root   8192 Sep 23 01:50 indexer

drwxr-xr-x   2 root  root  16384 Sep 23 00:00 logs

drwxr-xr-x   3 root  root   4096 Feb 23  2009 proxy

drwxr-xr-x   5 root  root   4096 May  7 13:26 router-groups

drwxr-xr-x  41 root  root   4096 Sep 22 16:08 storage

drwxr-xr-x   2 root  root   4096 Feb 20  2009 template-store

drwxr-xr-x   2 root  root   4096 Sep 23 09:54 timeline

drwxr-xr-x  36 root  root   4096 Sep 15 11:53 trash

It looks like some sort of a cron job, this is not a part of my backup job (intentionally).  I think this could be on my side, but could someone confirm that Nexus does not have any type of job that would create this folder?

Ah-hah!  It is on a NetApp share!  Thank you so much, that was driving me crazy!

Okay, then I don't have to worry about backing this up.  My only other question is, do you think this folder would in any way effect Nexus performance?  Or possibly the fact that NetApp is creating a snapshot, would that process effect Nexus performance?

Thanks a bunch for the reply.

Ronak

Well, that would depend on how your filer is configured and/or mounted
on your nexus host.  Realistically, no, you shouldn't see any
discernible performance problems while SnapVault is doing its thing.

As to whether or not Nexus ignores it, I'd assume Nexus ignores files
it doesn't know about... but the Sonatype folks would know more about
that than I do.

Yes, as Brian mentioned, nexus doesn't care about the contents in the sonatype folder that we don't maintain.
