[task #9882] Submission of manumissionFollow-up Comment #1, task #9882 (project administration): -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 November 6th 2009 in Savannah item #9882: "Submission of manumission" Hi, I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in Savannah. Note that I am not a member of the Savannah administration team. I only try to help you to fix the remaining issues in this project submission that I could find. If all hosting requirements for Savannah are met, an administrator will approve this submission. Please include a (perhaps temporary) URL pointing to the source code. You can forward the code to me by email or attach it to this tracker but the current "URL" is void since it specifies no protocol and no machine. We wish to review your source code, even if it is not functional, to catch potential legal issues early. For example, to release your program properly under the GNU GPL you must include a copyright notice and permission-to-copy statements at the beginning of every copyrightable file, usually any file more than 10 lines long. This is explained in http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html. Our review would help catch potential omissions such as these. Note that sending code to our repositories _is_ a release, since the code will then be publicly available through anonymous access. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.9 (GNU/Linux) iEYEARECAAYFAkr0p7AACgkQZ4DA0TLic4jYdQCdGhZt0zXS/FBMv6lUzBCn5SZo K9UAnRcrzaCpVyJQijGL54bewJw850qK =2raK -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- _______________________________________________________ Reply to this item at: <http://savannah.gnu.org/task/?9882> _______________________________________________ Message sent via/by Savannah http://savannah.gnu.org/ |

[task #9882] Submission of manumissionFollow-up Comment #2, task #9882 (project administration): -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 November 7th 2009 in Savannah item #9882: "Submission of manumission" Licensing under the "GNU GPL v2 only" is problematic. Would you agree to upgrade your project license to the "GNU GPL v3 or later"? It will be important for all GPL-covered programs to advance to that new version. If you don't put this in the files now, the only way to port your program to the next version of the GPL would be to ask each and every copyright holder, and that may be very difficult. We can explain the issue in more detail if you wish. If you have concerns about "GNU GPL v3 or later", we'd be happy to address them too. For licence under the GNU General Public Licence 3 or any later version follow the instructions at the Apendix of that licence. In short: put this header in *each* of your files: ;; file name -- short description of wath file does ;; ;; Copyright (C) 2009 Caliber Technology LLC ;; ;; This file is part of manumission ;; ;; manumission is free software: you can redistribute it and/or modify ;; it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by ;; the Free Software Foundation, either version 3 of the License, or ;; (at your option) any later version. ;; ;; manumission is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, ;; but WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY; without even the implied warranty of ;; MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. See the ;; GNU General Public License for more details. ;; ;; You should have received a copy of the GNU General Public License ;; along with manumission. [task #9882] Submission of manumissionFollow-up Comment #4, task #9882 (project administration): -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 November 11th 2009 in GNU Savannah item #9882: "Submission of manumission" Sebastian <sgerhardt> noticed me another problem: File index.html in "sample" directory says "The goal of this project is to supply an open-source alternative to the Microsoft Help Workshop.". Savannah-hosted should't talk about open-source but free software. See the requirements page: https://savannah.gnu.org/register/requirements.php. Can you change your project goal to be a free alternative to the Microsoft Help Workshop instead of a open source one?. See http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.html. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.9 (GNU/Linux) iEYEARECAAYFAkr6gWEACgkQZ4DA0TLic4gaRgCfSLikPo7JusF0wJU2/hA5f8nu AWUAnjxLSP75BKo4ssX+zgk+1ZFJu8QZ =Zq/8 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- _______________________________________________________ Reply to this item at: <http://savannah.gnu.org/task/?9882> _______________________________________________ Message sent via/by Savannah http://savannah.gnu.org/ |

[task #9882] Submission of manumissionFollow-up Comment #7, task #9882 (project administration): I'll need to add a dependency to this project, and this may have some bearing on the GPL version. I need to incorporate code from "lzx_compress", either by adding the source (preferred), or by dependency on the library. That project is licensed under the "LGPL" v2.1. I've attached the lzx_compress source. Would there be a problem with incorporating this code as-is in my project? _______________________________________________________ Reply to this item at: <http://savannah.gnu.org/task/?9882> _______________________________________________ Message sent via/by Savannah http://savannah.gnu.org/ |

[task #9882] Submission of manumissionFollow-up Comment #9, task #9882 (project administration): Hi, the LGPL is compatible to the GPL. In addition, it grants you as a recipient the right to relicense the software under GPL. What might be problematic is the "version 2.1 only". This is why Savannah is somewhat insisting all GPL projects use the "any later" clause. However my interpretation of the license text is that you have the freedom to relicense under any GPL version if you choose to switch to GPL. > 3. You may opt to apply the terms of the ordinary GNU General Public License instead of this License to a given copy of the Library. To do this, you must alter all the notices that refer to this License, so that they refer to the ordinary GNU General Public License, version 2, instead of to this License. (If a newer version than version 2 of the ordinary GNU General Public License has appeared, then you can specify that version instead if you wish.) So I'd say you can incorporate it into your project, switching it to GPLv3 or any later in the process. If another admin thinks I am mistaken, please speak up. _______________________________________________________ Reply to this item at: <http://savannah.gnu.org/task/?9882> _______________________________________________ Message sent via/by Savannah http://savannah.gnu.org/ |
